Summary: Let's talk about the four-letter word that's secretly destroying your health: ACID.
Let's talk about the four-letter word that's secretly destroying your health: ACID.
An acidic lifestyle--consuming foods such as sugar, grains, dairy, excess animal proteins, processed food, artificial sweeteners, along with lack of exercise and proper hydration, and stress--causes inflammation. And, inflammation is the culprit behind many of our current ailments, from weight gain to chronic disease.
There's good news. Health visionary Dr. Daryl Gioffre joins host Lisa Davis to share his revolutionary plan to rid your diet of highly acidic foods, alkalize your body and balance your pH.
With Dr. Gioffre's Get Off Your Acid plan, you'll:
Listen in for more details on how the plan works.

Humans’ genes have not changed for thousands of year; only lifestyle has. And it makes all the difference. How healthy people are almost entirely depends on what they put in their bodies.
The most important foods to avoid are the acid-forming foods, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of GET OFF YOUR ACID. The biggest offenders are sugar, grain, dairy, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, unhealthy fats, soda and caffeine.
They have a stacking effect. They build up in the body and cause more toxicity and inflammation. All of these can cause digestive issues and weight gain in the short term but can lead to serious health conditions such as cancer and diabetes in the long run.
Anytime something acidic is introduced into your body, it has a buffer system to help neutralize those acids. One of those primary buffers is fat, Dr. Gioffre adds.
“Your body would rather hold onto fat, encapsulating the acid or toxin, in order to protect the body from being harmed or damaged.” It is a self-protective mechanism designed to keep you healthy, in the short run. In the long run, it makes you heavier and more toxic, he says.
Milk
“Dairy products are highly acidic and they need to be avoided,” Dr. Gioffre, says. Milk is homogenized and pasteurized, killing most of the nutrients right along with any bad bacteria. “You flat out don’t need it,” he adds.
Flavored yogurt
If you want to eat yogurt and fruits, you are better off purchasing them separately and mixing them in a bowl. Flavored yogurts are often filled with added sugar. Just a small 8-ounce serving of the sweet dessert can have as many as 47 grams of sugar. The American Heart Association recommends for men 38 grams and women 25 grams of added sugar a day.
Soda
The high fructose corn syrup found in soda is by far the worst thing about it, Dr. Gioffre says. “It is the most dangerous because it goes directly to the liver and is stored as fat,” he adds. It also creates resistance to leptin, a hormone that decreases appetite. The condition is the main driver of fat gain in people.
Artificial sweeteners
Reducing the sugar content in products comes at a price. Artificial sweeteners are added to preserve the taste, but they have been shown to cause even more damage than sugar itself. New research suggests that one of the negative side effects is eating more. Splenda is among the worst, Dr. Gioffre says, as it has been linked to different types of cancer. However, more studies need to be done to confirm a connection.
Beer
Beer is among the worst kinds of alcohol you can consume, according to Dr. Gioffre. It’s basically fermented grains, which means it contains fungus. The darker the beer, the higher the mold content. Also, certain carbohydrates cause your body’s insulin level to spike. These include anything made of grains – such as beer.
It is genetically modified so much. It can increase inflammation in the body which leads to a thyroid imbalance,” Dr. Prudence Hall from The Hall Center says. The plant-based phytoestrogen found in soy can interfere with your body's ability to use thyroid hormone. Avoid soy if you already have problems with the gland.
Energy drinks
Energy drinks are infamously popular and notoriously bad for you, mostly because they are full of sugar. Your endothelial function is acutely worse after consuming the beverage, according to a study. Cardiac blood vessels become sluggish and don’t open as well. Make a healthy one yourself.
Anything with a straw
This causes premature aging. This may come as a shock but think about it: What do your lips do when you are drinking through a straw? You purse them. Do that too many times and you’ll start to see lip lines and wrinkles after a while because of the repetitive muscle motion. These lines will become even more obvious as you age because the skin loosens.
Farmed fish
To be healthy fish basically has to be flown in over-night from the ocean, Angela Martindale, a celebrity nutritionist says. “If you’re looking for fish to make at home, make sure that you always ask the seller where the fish came from, and try to buy it from a fresh fish market - you never want farmed fish,” she adds. In a farm environment, fish are so compact that they eat one another’s feces and those bacteria become a toxic part of your dinner.
They are among the worst drinks for your body. Fruit juices in stores are pasteurized, which means that all nutrition that is heat- sensitive gets destroyed and what remains is just lots of sugar, Carly Pollack, certified clinical nutritionist, says. Fiber, which makes us full and slows the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, is gone.
Commercial cookies
They are high in calories, fat and sugar. The worst culprit is hydrogenated oil. This is a kind of trans fat that is really bad for you; they raise LDL (the bad) cholesterol levels. Companies don’t have to list trans fats on the ingredient label unless there are more than 0.5g.Make cookies at home because then you’re more likely to use less sugar and butter.
Canned soup
Canned soups – and everything in a can for that matter – have a lot of sodium because that’s how the product is preserved. You probably didn’t know that sugar is also used for the same purpose. Just one can of Campbell’s classic tomato soup-on-the-go has 20 grams of sugar — the same amount of sugar as two donuts.
Hot dogs
Nitrates help them keep their color for longer but they are not doing your body any favors. They can convert to nitrite, causing the formation of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic chemicals, according to the CDC. Hot dogs are also extremely high in sodium, which leads to dehydrationand dry and old-looking skin.
Cold cuts
These processed meats are very high in sodium and fat. Consuming too much of it can lead to hypertension and damaged blood vessels, among other serious health problems. They are among the worst foods for the heart.
Microwave dinners
These fit into the “anything in a box” which you probably know is not a good category. In general, prepackaged meals are preserved with too much sodium and are very high in calorie content. Some have as much as 1,800 mg. The extra salt will cause the body to retain water, leaving you bloated, at the very least.
Bagels
Almost no one wants to be told that bagels are off limits, but you should cut them. It’s empty calories and a lot of salt. A bagel is roughly 250 calories and provides almost no nutrients, or fiber. Even a 100% Whole Wheat bagel has 565 mg of sodium. Depending on what you’re putting on them, you can consume almost a whole day’s worth of salt in one meal.
Microwave popcorn with butter
They are literally damaging your brain. The problem is trans fats, which decrease brainpower and zap memory. Trans fat can cause cellular destruction, wreak havoc on hormone production, adversely affect memory and increase inflammation in the brain. This inhibits the body’s production of Omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential to brain function, according to Psychology Today.
Margarine
This is just chemicals. There is nothing in it that is good for the body. It’s full of bad fats that dehydrate you, causing wrinkles. A study showed that higher consumption of margarine was linked to increased skin wrinkling. Margarine is made of vegetable oils, which are high in polyunsaturated fats. They lead to inflammation and cell mutation, which are linked to many health issues.
Foods containing bleached flour
Bleached flour is treated with chemical agents to speed up aging. It is more processed and contains less wholesome nutrients. Any food can be healthy but it all depends on what it’s made of, Vicki Tri from Fit w/ Vic in Oklahoma City says.
Protein breakfast bars
Some nutritionists call them “glorified candy bars.” There are so many options for protein bars and meal replacement bars in stores today. Many contain more than 200 calories per serving, and over 8-10 grams of sugar. They should be avoided at all costs.
Some of you may think that having fat-free or low-fat foods is acceptable. But you’re being misled. Something everyone needs to know about ‘fat free’ anything is that it doesn’t work, Dr. Gioffre says. The sugar and fat is replaced with artificial substances which can play tricks on the brainin a way worse than actual sugar.
Foods with too many ingredients
If a food’s ingredients label is a paragraph long and full of things the names of which you can’t even pronounce, then you can be fairly certain your body does not need it. Thake pop tarts, for example. The list of ingredients in pop tarts seems endless. It’s so long, you probably won’t even finish reading it.
“Enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, vitamin b1 [thiamin mononitrate], vitamin b2 [riboflavin], folic acid), corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, soybean and palm oil (with tbhq for freshness), sugar, cracker meal, contains two percent or less of wheat starch, salt, dried strawberries, dried pears, dried apples, leavening (baking soda, sodium acid pyrophosphate, monocalcium phosphate), citric acid, milled corn, gelatin, soybean oil, modified corn starch, caramel color, soy lecithin, xanthan gum, modified wheat starch, vitamin a palmitate, red 40, niacinamide, reduced iron, color added, turmeric extract, vitamin b6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), yellow 6, vitamin b2 (riboflavin), vitamin b1 (thiamin hydrochloride), blue 1.”
White bread
“Stick to whole grain, fiber rich carbohydrates such whole wheat bread,” Dr. Caroline Cederquist, founder of bistroMD, says. “Stay away from breads that don’t provide any nutritional value, like white bread; there's typically less fiber and less nutritional benefits.
Chips
Potato chips are often made with olestra, a fat substitute that adds no fat, calories or cholesterol. But it sticks to vitamins A, E, D and K and carotenoids, which are antioxidant nutrients, and flushes them out of the body, according to a study. Carotenoids provide important antioxidants to help prevent premature skin damage and skin cancer. Also, a recent study found that refined carbs were the main culprit in acne.
Fried foods
“The body likes healthy fats like omega-3s in fish, olive and coconut oil,” Dr. Hall says. “But the second you start to fry foods, the oil becomes carcinogenic,” she adds. Avoid anything that is deep fried and if you must fry, use coconut oil, she adds. Fats in general disrupt the thyroid's ability to produce enough hormone.
Ice cream
“Every time I see an overweight patient, my first question is ‘If I open your fridge, will I find ice cream?’ The answer usually is ‘yes,’” Dr. David Fischman, co-director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson University, says. “Get rid of it.” It is very high in calories and fat, and it contributes to high cholesterol levels. According to myfitnesspal, half a cup of vanilla ice cream contains 145 calories, 58mg of sodium, 8g of fat, 17g of carbs, and 32mg of cholesterol.
Non-organic produce
Some fruits contain significant pesticide residue when grown conventionally. These pesticides can be dangerous for your health. By the time you turn 30 your body has been collecting these toxins for a while, which can lead to slower metabolism and out of balance hormone levels. Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever you can.
Bacon
There is too much fat in bacon, Dr. Fischman says. The enormous amount of nitrates doesn’t make the food any better. It’s “bad for the heart (cholesterol and saturated fat) and the worst for weight loss. SO don’t add it to your salad, even if the rest of it is all greens.
Coffee creamer
The problem is titanium dioxide, which is an additive that has been shown to cause liver and tissue damage in mice. The additive is the most widely used white pigment. If that’s not enough, liquid coffee creamers are loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, and trans fats. You’ll recognize them by the name “hydrogenated oil” written on the label.
Sugar alcohols
They are typically found in sugar-free gym and other similar products. Two types of sugar alcohols – Xylitol and Sorbitol – are used in sugar-free foods, and they are harmful to tooth enamel. The two have a third of the calories that sugar does which is why they are used in diet soda drinks.

]]>How do you lose weight? Don’t Google it; this is part of the problem. People trying to shed the extra pounds are getting so much information thrown at them, and that leads to them to getting overwhelmed.
When it comes to weight loss, one’s diet is the No. 1 thing that will affect both the scale and physical appearance, Andrea Marcellus, fitness expert and founder and CEO of and/life, says.
Exercise is, of course, important for your heart health and for maintaining muscle tone and improving your posture. “But it’s not uncommon for people who work out all the time to fail to see the results they want,” Marcellus adds. “When that happens the first thing you need to look at is your food strategy.”
Your food strategy cannot be based on an all-or-none approach, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of GET OFF YOUR ACID. It never works because it’s deprivation. “It’s not about winning the battle; it’s about winning the war.”
One of the rules Marcellus teaches her clients is to “Live the Rule of Awesome.” This means only indulging in something that’s really, really, super-duper amazing. “So if you’re out at a restaurant that has the most amazing fettuccine - go ahead and order it!” she adds.
The trick is to eat just until you feel “satisfied,” which is a couple bites before “full.” But if you’re thinking about stopping at a fast-food place for quick snack – pass, she adds. “There’s no way that burger is going to be the most awesome thing in your day.”
You can still eat whatever you want
Just not all the time. “The truth is you can achieve a level of fitness you won’t believe and still eat whatever you want 20 percent of the time if you learn how to eat for your body and activate your life with moderate exercise and more walking and standing,” Marcellus, says. The app offers a customized food strategy based on ingredients you choose and one-click tracker that helps you figure out how to eat to your personal best advantage.
Dark chocolate
If you have a sweet tooth, it’s OK to finish the day with two pieces of dark chocolate from a traditional chocolate bar – 2” x 2” x ¼”. Dark chocolate has zinc which regulates energy, fat storage and appetite. Just make sure it’s at least 75 percent cocoa.
Eat simpler foods
By tweaking your eating plan to simpler foods a little at a time and making them your new go-to’s, your taste for salty, sugary, and greasy foods actually changes, Marcellus says. “And so even when you eat more indulgent choices socially, you won’t be able to eat as much of them.” The basic rule she uses is to stick to foods “one step away from a tree.” This means eating less of the processed stuff and more whole ingredients that come straight from the farm, she adds.
Green vegetables
“The darker the color the better,” says Monica Amsterdam, director of nutrition at the Medical and Wellness Center of New Jersey. Foods like spinach, mustard greens, collards and kale are loaded in nutrients like vitamins A, C, K, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and most importantly fiber. “It will keep you full. Add them to your smoothies, omelets, and a great replacement for iceberg/romaine lettuce.”
Pecans
They are low in calories and high in fiber, which will satisfy your hunger faster, ORBERA weight loss balloon nutritionist Lara Hamilton, RD and CDE, says. “They also contain healthy, unsaturated fats which aid in lowering cholesterol.”
Peppermint helps to get rid of belly bloat and promotes healthy digestion. “Add it to flavor your water or make iced peppermint tea without adding sugar and definitely no artificial sweeteners; if you really need to add sugar, a better option is coconut palm sugar,” Amsterdam says. If you don’t like mint leaves, some alternatives are basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, marjoram and lavender.
Popcorn
Popcorn can be a low calorie and fiber rich snack. And you can do a lot with it. Skip the movie theater butter style popcorn for your own stovetop or air popped variety. Punch up the flavor and crunch with bold spices to make it more tasty but healthy at the same time.
Avocado
“I call it God’s butter,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of GET OFF YOUR ACID. It’s one of the most versatile foods, he adds. Avocados are a great fat to add to your daily diet, as they encourage fat burning and fight insulin resistance. They are also loaded with antioxidants and fiber to keep you feeling full for longer.
Salmon
Salmon is a true year-round superfood. It’s a great source of protein and high in Omega-3 fatty acids including EPA and DHA. “This fish will keep you full and even has anti-inflammatory benefits. Just be careful not to add to many condiments,” Amsterdam adds. “All this tasty fish needs is salt, pepper, olive oil and lemon juice.” If salmon is too expensive for you, trout is a great alternative.
Eggs got a bad reputation from being too high in cholesterol, which can’t be further from the truth, according to Amsterdam. Eat the whole egg, yolk too. “The combination of protein and fat will help you feel full and prevent overeating.” The protein will help build your muscle and burn fat to tone your physique. Eggs make a great afternoon snack, as they are the perfect on-the-go snack.
Water, water, water
Reduce stomach bloat and keep your digestion on track with the good old fashion H2O, Amsterdam says. The rule of thumb is to drink half your body’s weight. So if you weigh 150 lbs, make sure you’re drinking at least 75 oz (9 ½ cups) of water every day. Make it more interesting by adding lemon, frozen fruits, cucumber.
Quinoa
Quinoa is perfect if you decided to cut carbs from your diet. “It is a tasty alternative when you’re craving carbs,” Amsterdam says. Quinoa is another superfood that contains nine essential amino acids, has tons of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Oats
Oatmeal in a bag is the worst. Instead, opt for steel cuts oats which are minimally processed and loaded with fiber and protein. “Studies have shown if you start your day with 1 cup of steel cut oats, it will help to reduce cholesterol and maintain healthy blood sugar levels throughout the day (this is the key to preventing munching),” Amsterdam says.
Add hot spices
Spicy food is a good option for food if you’re trying to lose weight. “Spices have medicinal proprieties, most of them are anti-inflammatory and boost up our metabolism,” Amsterdam says. Foods flavored with chili pepper may help decrease your appetite and make you feel full, according to University of Maryland Medical Center.
Berries
“Luckily we are heading into berry season which means fresh berries won’t be super expensive,” Amsterdam says. Berries are loaded with antioxidants and fiber and improve blood flow to your muscles. Blackberries are powerhouses of essential amino and digestive health acids, minerals, and vitamins, and provide a boost of energy and fiber which help regulate blood sugar levels.
Grapefruit and pineapple
Grapefruit will make your skin glow, literally. It’s loaded in vitamin C and full of water to hydrate your body. “It also reduces insulin level and boost your metabolism,” according to Amsterdam. Pineapple contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme that helps to reduce gas and bloating.
Parsley
Parsley is a natural diuretic and helps people to get rid of excess fluid without draining the body of potassium, Amsterdam says. It also supports blood sugar balance, helping with lasting weight control. Add it to your salads or smoothies.
Lentils
“A cup of lentils gives you the same amount of protein as 3 eggs and contains less dietary fat,” Michelle Roots, owner and personal trainer at CORE Conditioning, says. “Lentils are also very high fiber, so you feel full for a longer period of time after eating.”
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are high in lycopene which has been shown to protect against sun damage. Tomatoes are loaded in flavor and taste great raw, sautéed, grilled and even blended in a smoothie, which is totally a thing, Amsterdam says. “Tomatoes are a fruit after all. Apples, tomatoes and cucumber make for a great detox drink.”
Soupe
“Soups are very healthy if homemade,” Amsterdam says. When choosing ones that come in a box, pay close attention to the labels. Check the sodium content and ingredient list. Too much sodium can start a vicious cycle of bad events in your body.
Peppers
“Many peppers are highly alkaline and great for your metabolism,” Dr. Gioffre says. Good options are red bell peppers, yellow and orange, shishito, jalapeno, cayenne (excellent for weight loss), and black pepper. “Avoid the green ones as they are acidic.”
Hummus
“Hummus and other bean dips make satisfying alternatives to some other dips that offer few nutrition benefits,” Marisa Moore, registered dietitian nutritionist, says. Not only are beans high in protein and fiber, but bean dips are a blank canvas for other goodies like garlic and are perfect paired with fresh, crunchy vegetables, she adds. “Chickpeas in particular are high in fiber and pair well with a variety of different flavors and cooking methods from mashing to sautéing and roasting.”
Limes are alkaline-forming to your body, Dr. Gioffre says. When deciphering if a food is alkaline (which is good) or acid (which is bad), there are 2 things you have to look at – the mineral content, and the sugar content, he adds. Limes are 2 percent sugar, where oranges are 12 percent. In addition, ALWAYS consume fruits by themselves. Dr. Gioffre says.
Artichokes
This delicious plant is a mild diuretic and helps in the removal of toxins, according to Amsterdam. In addition, artichokes purify and protect the liver; they are high in fiber, consequently keep you less bloated because they promote regularity.
“These healthy potatoes are loaded with fiber to promote healthy digestion,” Roots says. “They are high in potassium and also improve blood sugar regulation to aid in weight loss.”

]]>The body doesn’t suddenly crash. It sends many signals prior to an ER visit. You can save yourself thousands of dollars by staying healthy while simultaneously avoiding doctors and hospitals.
In caring for your health, how you manage your physical and internal emotional life is equally important. Failure to manage this results in depression, unhappiness, anxiety and general lack of quality of life.
Like it or not, longevity comes at a price. You have to steer clear of certain damaging behaviors, sometimes not for very obvious reasons. It’s not enough to exercise and eat enough fruits and vegetables every day. You also have to be aware of what not to do.
Your last meal of the day should be consumed at least three hours before sleeping, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of GET OFF YOUR ACID, says. The body heals at night; so if you eat too late, it will use its energy for digestion, which is why you wake up feeling exhausted instead of rested and refreshed, he adds.
This is what wrong approach, Dr. Gioffre says. Every time you put food in your body, your insulin spikes. Your body stores fat when that happens and inflammation - the body's attempt to heal itself after an injury – occurs. You should be eating three meals a day so the body will burn stored fat and not just sugar, he adds.
Milk is acidic and should be avoided, Dr. Gioffre says. Also, “the body neutralizes the acid in milk by drawing calcium from the bones, which increases the risk of bone fractures,” he adds. Some fitness trainers avoid it for other reasons – there are healthy ways to intake calcium, protein and fat without worrying about what went into the cow. Water with lemon is best for hydration anyway, Dr. Gioffre says.
Sugar is eight time more addictive than cocaine, Dr. Gioffre says. It is a substance that releases opioids and dopamine. So eating a lot of refined processed sugars leads to the production of the brain's natural opioids, which
is key in the process of getting addicted to anything. The body can handle, as in metabolize, six teaspoons of added sugar per day. The problem is that people consume a lot more than that. The result is chaos, stress and overload for the body that can lead to both physical and mental illnesses. Cognitive impairment, especially dementia, is a possible result, according to research.
This way not enough momentum is built to get best results, Dr. Mike Israetel, a U.S. Olympic Sports Nutrition, Team USA Weightlifting Consultant, and Chief Sport Scientist for Renaissance Periodization, says. “Switching too often can both knock you off track of a distinct goal and be too big of a shock for the body to respond to in the most productive ways, he adds.
Sticking with workouts for too long leads to psychological staleness, reduced rates of improvement, and higher chances of wear-and-tear injuries, Dr. Israetel says. The better method, he adds, is probably to let yourself get into the groove with a certain kind of workout or group of workouts that you do every week, and for weeks on end seek to perform at higher and higher levels in those workouts. “After several months (usually 2-4), your performance will flatten out and that might be the time to pick a new series of workouts and repeat the process.”
It can cause headaches for some (not all) people, Dr. Israetel says. Also, it can lead to bloating. Chewing gum causes you to swallow extra air which leads to abdominal bloating. Also, chewing gum makes your body think that food is coming in. It starts to produce the enzymes necessary to break it down. But when there is no food to process, bloating occurs because now you have too much stomach acid in your belly.
First, try to eat by a logical meal plan and stick to your goals of what you HAVE to eat to get there vs. what you WANT to eat, Dr. Israetel says. “This will improve your habits of seeing food more as fuel and less as an emotional habit.” Secondly, he adds, it's good to try to develop hobbies and other fun activities that allow you to enjoy yourself without food being involved. “Thus, when you're stressed out and want to eat emotionally, you at least have the alternative of blowing off the stress in a non-food way.
Seeing the scale emotionally
Weighing yourself once a week is fine, Dr Israetel says. “In fact, weighing 2-3 times a week is probably the best trade-off of accuracy and effort.” However, the bad habit is seeing the scale emotionally vs. as a guide to your logical diet and training goals. “The scale is a signpost on your fitness journey, NOT a measurement of your worth as a person.”
Instead, put in a bit of effort to go out looking for healthy food that's less processed. Dr. Israetel, who says he is guilty of this bad habit, says. “Not that there's anything wrong with processed food in moderation, but a bit too much can do a number on your digestive system and have you feeling a bit less than your best for a day or so.”
Going from fad diet to fad diet in the search of a magic solution to fitness is something you should stop doing ASAP, Dr. Israetel says. “Choose a logical plan (like those we offer at Renaissance Periodization backed by science), realistic goals, and STICK TO THE PROCESS, and you'll be giving yourself the best chances for success.”
“The absolute worst daily habit I see in my patients is the abuse of drugs and alcohol to deal with issues they want to avoid,” Dr. R.Y. Langham, a professional consultant for the Between Us Clinic, says. Over time, it typically takes more and more of the drugs and alcohol to provide the individual with the “numbness” they are seeking, she adds. “Eventually, the drug and alcohol abuse turns into a full-fledge addiction, worsening the situation and affecting various areas of the patient’s life – i.e. self-esteem, work performance, friendships, grades, finances, health, and/or romantic relationships.”
This is the most common habit Dr. Langham sees in patients. “Everyone lies, but some people lie most, if not all of the time, which is a terrible habit – and one that can cause a lot of pain and anguish in life,” she says. These deliberate liars honestly believe they are smarter than most people, she adds. Some people lie because they are afraid of what people will think. “In couple’s counseling, people lie about who did what and who said what during arguments. Most individuals refuse to accept their parts in the destruction of the relationship,” Dr. Lanham says.
People are too hard on themselves, Dr. Langham says. “They think life, themselves, others, and the world should be perfect and fair, in reality it is not.” When it finally dawns on them that life is not perfect, they beat themselves up and self-destruct, she adds. “More specifically, they ruin friendships, relationships, careers, etc. They turn to drugs and alcohol, violence, etc. They become hopeless and simply give up – which is the worst thing to do.” It’s okay to not be perfect, but the key is to keep striving to be a better person than they were the day before, she adds.
“Sometimes patients will try to ignore or push aside past trauma without addressing it and working through it, Dr. Langham says. They simply push it to the back of their minds and hope that it doesn’t resurface, but it will – eventually. “Ignoring issues doesn’t make them go away, no, it magnifies them. It also causes the pain to fester and grow inside of a person until they begin to ‘rot’ from the inside out.” It can eat a person up, until he/she turns to addiction, violence, rage, and/or even suicide to escape the pain, she adds.
There is always room for growth, learning, and improvement. This is something Dr. Langham is also personally working. “I am a work in progress.”
People should stop judging others, Dr. Langham says. “People miss out on really great people, who could enrich their lives, simply because of the color of their skin, their sexual orientation, gender, or religion. I see this a lot in sessions – people hating others based on some trait or demographic.” Her suggestion is to spend time with the people that you have prejudices against – learn about them – because you may find out that you have more in common than you think.
“Some patients hold on grudges for 20 or 30 years,” Dr. Langham says. “They can’t or won’t let them go, so they drag them down. In other words, these past grudges make them bitter and angry, which affects all facets of their lives, so my suggestion is to just let it go.”
“People take sleep for granted,” Dr. Boyan Hadjiev, board-certified in Internal Medicine and Allergy and Immunology. Many nap for eight hours but still feel tired because the quality of their sleep was poor. “It is as important as the number of hours,” he adds. “It should be uninterrupted.” That means no TV or phones in bed, no alcohol before bedtime, keeping the same sleep schedule, no big meals after dinner, and less caffeine.
“Ninety percent of people are chronically thirsty,” Dr. Gioffre says. “You’re supposed to drink 3-4 liters of water a day,” he adds. Supercharge your water, he suggests, with alkaline powder or put minerals such as magnesium in it to neutralize the acid in the body. Some ways to consume more water during the day include drinking tea, eating soups, setting reminders, and even using a drinking water app.
The mother of all bad habits, perhaps…Smoking is by far one of the worst things you can do to your body and you should quit the habit, Dr. Hadjiev says. “We have a nurse in our office who is down to three cigarettes from two packs a day.” Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death
The absolute worst daily habit Dr. John Gallucci, MS, ATC, PT, DPT at JAG Physical Therapy, sees in patients is returning to poor body mechanics following work to correct them during their physical therapy session. “For example, we will work with a patient to teach proper gait (walking) mechanics following the removal of a CAM boot or crutches and they will walk out of our clinic with no limp. However, when we see them a day or two later they have returned to walking with the limp we worked to improve upon.”
The most common bad habit is non-compliance with the home exercise programs, Dr. Gallucci says. Physical therapists give these programs to their patients to enhance their program and as a means to ensure that regression does not occur during the days the patient will not see their therapist, he adds. “Non-compliance with these programs unfortunately causes setbacks in the patient’s recovery timeline.”
“We do often come across patients who leave details out that may be helpful in determining the extent of the injury and course of treatment,” Dr. Gallucci says. Many patients decide to leave details, such as how long they have been experiencing pain or how the injury occurred because they feel it isn’t important or they are embarrassed to tell the story, he adds. “Giving your Physical Therapist as much information as possible, even if you don’t think it relates, gives you –the patient – the best chance at a successful recovery.”
“I believe people are so busy in today’s world that they tell themselves that there is no time to fit a workout into their daily life,” Dr. Gallucci says. “We know our patients lead busy lives, and that is why we teach them stretches and exercises that can be done anywhere at any time (i.e. the office, at home, in the car).” One can also build additional exercise into his or her daily schedule by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking far away from your office building, performing 10 squats before sitting down or performing walking lunges on the way to the water cooler, he adds.
“Proper posture stems from the strength of our core musculature and therefore in order to truly correct our posture we must work on improving our core strength, which can take 2-3 months before noticeable improvements are made,” Dr. Gallucci says. However, in the meantime, people can work on re-training their muscle memory to sit and stand up straighter and to walk with their chins up simply by correcting themselves when they notice the improper mechanics, he adds.
“Heavy loads place increased stress on the neck and back which can cause postural deficits and injuries,” Dr. Gallucci says. “However, if we must carry a heavy bag we should remember to use a bag with two straps (i.e. a backpack) to carry the bag as close to our body as possible and to evenly distribute the weight throughout the bag with the heavier items placed on the bottom.

]]>Super food is a word that is commonly used by many people, and can have many different meanings. “In my opinion, a superfood is a food that has what I call the ‘triple A’ effect of health – anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and alkaline,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and founder of the Alkamind Cleanse.
These are foods that are high in minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber, and low in sugar. Most importantly, he adds, they are foods that eliminate acid from your body and help your balance your body’s pH, which helps with weight loss.
“In fact, in a recent study researchers listed the top 41 powerhouse foods (a.k.a. ‘superfoods’) that have the ability to reduce chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, and out of the 41, all were plant-based, and 39 out of 41 were alkaline,” Dr. Gioffre says. Watercress came in at No. 1, dethroning kale as the top powerhouse superfood.
The more colorful your plate is, the more “super” it is, according to general theory. “I am always encouraging clients to ‘eat the rainbow’, incorporating as many of the phytochemical compounds that give the vegetables or fruit their color that hold specific health benefits,” Dr. Gioffre says.
If you are looking to detox and build healthy blood, then wheatgrass (greens) is a great choice, he adds. If you want to improve heart health, add some beets (red) into your diet. If you want to boost immune function, take advantage of the antioxidant properties of berries (purple).
But it’s important to remember that the color does not say it all. What matters is what a specific food contains in regards to mineral and sugar content. “A perfect example would be the yellow banana,” Dr. Gioffre says. “Bananas are an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C, and are high in fiber, but they also come with 25 percent sugar which makes it an acidic fruit.”
If you want to take advantage of the healthy properties of the banana, minus the acidic effects, eat it with a healthy fat, he says. “The healthy fat, like a raw almond or coconut butter, will slow down the metabolization of the sugar in the banana, preventing your insulin from spiking in your blood.”

]]>Is the Standard American Diet Making You Sad, Sick, and Tired?
Perhaps it’s no coincidence that its abbreviation is S.A.D. More than a third of adults in America are obese, and more than 70 percent are overweight, according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.
While a major factor for this crisis is a sedentary lifestyle, by far the biggest contributor is diet. Failing to break unhealthy eating habits for too long will come back in the form of pain and chronic inflammation,
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
which, research shows, plays a role in obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
The stats
About 63 percent of the standard American diet is processed foods with added refined sugar, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and author of GET OFF YOUR ACID, says. A quarter is animal-based foods, and only 12 percent are plant-based, he adds. “Half of that is French fries, so really only 6 percent of what most people eat is whole foods.”
The favorites
Cheeseburgers and mac and cheese, for example, are popular examples of protein and starch. “This is the worst combination,” Dr. Gioffre says. “They cancel each other out.” The protein (the meat) is digested by the acid, called pepsin, in the stomach. The starch, in this case the bun or the macaroni, leads to the secretion of an enzyme called ptyalin, which creates an alkaline condition. So they neutralize each other — this makes your gut “a breeding
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19+
ground for bad bacteria and sets off an inflammation cascade,” Dr. Gioffre says.
Worse than most people think
“We are the most technologically advanced country in the world, and yet we die sooner [than people in other rich country], and more than 80 percent of people die from a chronic disease, Dr. Gioffre says. The No. 1 killer in America is heart disease. One in four adults had two or more chronic health conditions, according to the CDC.
Most Americans are not eating the way that they should, Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in the New York City area, says. “The majority of Americans are eating more than the recommended amount of saturated fats, sodium, and added sugar. And about three fourths of the U.S. population is eating too little vegetables, fruits, dairy, and oils.”
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
Too many acidic foods
Coffee, milk, fries, grains (beer), processed food, carbonated drinks…Take your pick. Consuming too many acid-producing products leads to acidity in your urine and chronic inflammation, which can lead to serious health problem on the long run. Too much acidity in your body can also increase your risk for developing cancer, as well as liver and heart diseases.
Sugar is everywhere
“In the U.S., we are consuming too much added sugar!” Gorin says. This is especially the case with sugary breakfast foods, such as doughnuts and pastries—and even smoothies with too much added sugar. “You can easily whip up a healthy breakfast that’s sweet and contains no added sugar but is full of health-helping nutrients,” she adds.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
Sugar makes you tired, not energetic
After the short-lived sugar rush comes the sugar crash. A study by the University of Illinois found that, matched calorie for calorie with the simple sugar glucose, fructose causes significant weight gain, physical inactivity, and body fat deposition. The mice that consumed more sugars traveled about 20 percent less, possibly because they gained weight. This is how eating ton of sugar really harms your body.
Very high sodium intake
“In America, we are also eating a lot of salty foods such as some processed meats and certain frozen meals,” Gorin says. Making small swaps can help to reduce your sodium intake. “For instance, instead of adding three ounces of turkey breast deli meat—and more than 500 milligrams of sodium—to a
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
sandwich, top a fresh veggie salad with plant-based proteins, instead, she says. You can add pistachios, which are among highest protein-containing nuts, or tofu, which is high in protein and low in sodium, she adds. This is how consuming too much sodium really harms the body.
Trans fats are very, very bad for you
They can increase your “bad” LDL cholesterol, lower your “good” HDL cholesterol, and raise your chance of heart disease, Gorin says. You can work to avoid them by reading ingredient labels to make sure that no partially hydrogenated oils are on the ingredient list. “These fats tend to lurk in foods like packaged desserts.” Gorin recommends instead making your own healthy, whole foods dessert such as a chocolate-banana nice cream, made of just bananas and unsweetened cocoa powder.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
Why S.A.D. makes you sad
Behavioral changes may be due to a combination of both sugar and fat, according to research. Eating foods high in sugar decreases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that helps cells communicate to learn and form memories. Lower levels of BDNF are linked to higher blood glucose levels, increasing the risk of depression and Alzheimer’s.
Barely any whole foods
Some may be confused about what “whole foods” really means. These are plant foods that are unprocessed and unrefined before consumptions. This also applies to foods that have been processed as little as possible. For example, instead of eating sugary breakfast cereal in the morning, make yourself a veggie omelet.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
“It saddens me to see people missing out on fruits and veggies,” Gorin says. Adding these to your diet is one of the easiest ways to make it healthier—and these foods are rich in water, which means that they can help fill you up and help you eat less overall, she adds. “They’re also full of health-helping vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.”
What’s the problem?
“I think a large part of it is convenience and habit,” Gorin says. If you’re eating on the go, a lot of the foods that are available are the ones that are higher in calories, saturated fat, or added sugar, she adds. The office is a breeding ground for bad diet habits. What are the most largely available snacks there –
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
pretzels, pizza, vending machine favorites such as chips, and soda, which is slowly killing you.
How to fix it?
“Just planning ahead a little—whether that means finding a restaurant with healthier options or picking the healthiest item off the menu before you arrive at the restaurant—will benefit you greatly, Gorin says. Add some exercise to your day, make time for a walk after a meal to help digestion, and, perhaps surprisingly, pay cash for food. Credit card payments increase unhealthy food purchases, according to a study. This is because giving away actual bills is psychologically grimmer than simply swiping a credit card.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
Meal prep
“You can do some light meal prep ahead of time at home, even if that’s slicing and bagging veggies over the weekend so you can add them to your sandwich or toss them into a stir-fry during the week,” Gorin says. Set a day for cooking. Make big portions of things you like so you have leftovers and you don’t have to think about cooking for a few days. One roast chicken, for example, can be turned into four meals with a salad or in a wrap.
Healthier spins on biggest offenders
If you’re in the habit of eating pizza or pasta many times a week, try healthier spins on the food, Gorin suggests. For instance, make your own pizza with healthy toppings such as tomatoes and white beans, or swap spaghetti squash for pasta.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
Some of Gorin’s favorite suggestions for eating more fruits and veggies are to blend a banana into a smoothie, serve roasted asparagus alongside chicken breast or salmon, or add onions and green beans to a stir-fry. “I always keep frozen fruits and vegetables in my freezer so I have no excuses,” she adds.
About smoothies…
People seem to be into smoothies a lot lately. However, some commercial smoothies have too much sugar, especially if they only contain fruits and no veggies at all. Some of the worst drinks that people think are healthy is the Naked juices that you see everywhere. Take a look at the amount of sugar – it’s the amount of over two candy bars. Some have 53 grams of it.
https://www.theactivetimes.com/content/standard-american-diet-making-you-sad-sick-and-tired/slide-19
An estimated 50-70 million adults in the U.S. have some type of sleep or wakefulness disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). With a multitude of adverse health effects, insufficient shut-eye is an important public health concern.
If you’re tired of counting sheep and staring at the ceiling when trying to turn in for the night, a solution may be as simple as an after-dinner snack.
Minerals, calcium and magnesium especially, are the key ingredients people should look for in their last meal before bed, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says.
They are important because they help make melatonin and serotonin, both of which are hormones that regulate various functions such as sleep, appetite and mood. “Before bed snacks should be high in minerals and low on sugar,” he adds. That means no pasta or bread either.
Leafy greens are an ideal option for a salad at dinner, but be careful not to overcook them. Dr. Gioffre recommends “splash sautee,” where the veggies are steamed for no more than four minutes. “This way all enzymes and nutrients are not lost and they don’t lose their effect on producing melatonin.”
There should be a three-hour window between eating and sleeping, Dr. Gioffre says. And keep the snacks light. Research shows that people with the healthiest sleep patterns have the best and most diverse diets.
“About 80 percent of your dinner should be veggies and healthy fats, which slow down the metabolism of sugar; 10-15 percent should be protein; and about 5 percent carbs from vegetables such as sweet potatoes,” Dr. Gioffre says.

NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER
This is a great source of protein and saturated or useful fats, says DyanHes, a medical director at Gramery Pediatrics and is a specialist in obesity. "Two tablespoons of butter is a good snack in itself. It can also be spread over apple cider or whole grain bread roll. "
HUMMUS
"This is also a great snack as it is, with a dip and spread," says Hes. Hummus is a good source of protein, fiber and healthy fats. "It can be used as a dip for carrots, wheat crackers or pitasps. I actually use it in the sandwiches of mayonnaise and mustard. "
TURKEY BREAST
It is assumed that the meat does not contain nitrite, says Hes. "I often do this when I do not have time to cook or when children need a snack," she says. "We eat it as it is or in rolls with avocado, cucumber or pickles. Sometimes I eat turkey rolls up to the morning. "
EGG
Eggs are an excellent source of protein, healthy fats and omega fatty acids, says a certified nutritionist Monica Moore. "Eggs can be made in many different ways, and they are one of the cheapest protein sources!" DyanHes tells that he cooks eggs for the weekends at weekends.
DRIED FRUITS
"I like fresh fruits, but unsweetened dried fruits are a great option for those days when you do not have time to shop, have stuck in the office and make a mind of something sweet," Hes says. "I especially like apples and mangoes, but they all are good." Dried apricots are a good source of calcium, he adds.
GREEN TEA
Green tea is a great stimulant for those with coffee that causes heartburn, Hes says. Green tea polyphenols are believed to have many health effects, including anti-cancer properties to improve metabolism.
"TUJU" GREENHOUSE
Nutrition specialist and personal trainer Joe Bauer says he uses spinach, kale, greasy yogurt, oil, protein powder and cinnamon. "I take care that I always have those ingredients in my home. In Tuja, my green spirit (as I call it) has a lot of natural vitamins and minerals, important fatty acids, protein and lots of fibers. "Bauer drinks the green spirit at least once a day.
OLD GOOD OATMEAL
"I've always liked the traditional kaurapuurosta," says Bauer. Oatmeal is a great source of slow-absorbing fiber-rich carbohydrates, and it also provides fats and proteins. "I add oatmeal to a tablespoon oil, chocolate or vanilla protein powder, wheat bran and rip cinnamon. Delicious!"
SWEET POTATO
"Today, a low carbohydrate diet is required for everyone, but athletes and trainers need a lot of good carbohydrates," Bauer says. "With oat bran, sweet potato gets very slowly absorbable fiber-rich carbohydrates. That's why my kitchens always have sweet potatoes. "From the patates you can make French, or you can cook with meat, giving you a delicious meal for several days.
HIGH QUALITY MEAT
"I have no obesity," Bauer says. "Personally, I stay away from red muscle, but it's because of my blood type." It's a good idea to make sure that the meat is a free animal, "Bauer adds. "I usually have chicken or turkey in the refrigerator to make sure I get enough protein every day."
RX BARS
"I eat those couple three times a week. I always have these to go in case I do not have time to eat a full meal, "Bauer says. "These are my favorites, because there are no unnecessary ingredients in them, and the texture and taste are good."
OLIVE OIL
A certified nutritionist Mia Russo Stern, who also works as a food blogger and develops food recipes, says he is using high quality olive oil for salads and baking garlic for fresh spinach to be enjoyed. DyanHes is also a friend of olive oil. "I have it in a litter box! I sprinkle oil over the vegetables and use it for frying, "he says.
ORGANIC BPA CANS
"I always have organic BPA cans in the closet," says Stern. "I often put together a cold papal salad, which I can add to a pasta, with a mixture of olive oil and lemon to dip it or use it as a spread." The cookies are one of Stern's favorites.
OATS
The oat is a wholegrain grain that contains a lot of fiber and is full, Moore says. "The oats are good for the heart, cheap and it is well preserved in the closet." The oats can be eaten as flakes with fruit. Oat flakes can also be used to bake muffins, biscuits or breads.
AVOCADO
"Avocado is probably my favorite food of all ages. It is called 'God's Fat' for a reason, "says the well-known nutrition specialist and doctor Daryl Gioffre. Avocado is, above all, versatile: it can be used almost anywhere, even in desserts. "In fact, I'm making a sociable good avocado chocolate mousse," says Gioffre. Avocado contains vitamins K, C, B5 and B6. It is also a good source of calcium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, magnesium and iron. "I always have ripe avocados ready for use. I can keep them in the fridge, where they stay fresh for up to three weeks. "
GREEK YOGURT
A registered nutritionist and diabetic trainer, Deborah Malkoff-Cohen, says that they always find Greek yoghurt in their refrigerator, as protein-like foods like that keep starvation long and prevent the blood sugar being thrown away. He recommends avoiding yogurt flavored with sugar and sweeteners. "In fact, I add berries, banana or nettomelon to yogurt. If yogurt wants to be salty, you can add chickens. "
COTTAGE CHEESE
"I have an angry love relationship with cheese, but I still have it in my refrigerator," says Malkoff-Cohen. The cottage cheese contains a lot of protein and is well suited for enjoying high-fiber, antioxidant-containing berries. Add some blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and / or raspberries.
BLACK BEANS
"I am a great friend of the beans," says Malkoff-Cohen. Black beans can be added to many different foods if you want more protein. They also contain a lot of fibers. You should eat black beans with egg white, edamam and lime and pepper flakes as a snack.
BABYBELEN CHEESE
"I love babybel cheese," says Malkoff-Cohen. "I have a snack at work as it's so easy to take." One of the 20 grams of cheese has five grams of protein. It receives 15 percent of the daily calcium requirement.
NUTS
Malkoff-Cohen always has a lot of nuts - like almonds, cashew nuts and walnuts - at home. They are a good source of healthy fats. "It's easy to taste in different ways, and they are also a good snack," he says. A handful of nuts with sea salt is a good option. The sea salt contains plenty of sodium, potassium, magnesium, bromide, chloride, iron, copper and zinc.
DARK CHOCOLATE
Who would have guessed that there is food that is both delicious and healthy? The chocolate ingredient is a cocoa that is full of antioxidants and health-enhancing chemicals. One studysuggests that certain ingredients of the chocolate will improve the metabolism, which causes the body to burn fat faster. Try dark chocolate with almond.
CANNED TUNA
Cuttlefish is known for its protein and omega-3 fatty acid concentrations. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for blood and brain health. "Purse tuna is easy to use," says Malkoff-Cohen. It is a budget-friendly food that can be manufactured in many different ways. It is also a pretty good source of vitamin D.
]]>The biggest factor that makes the body resistant to change when it comes to weight loss is the pH levels of how much acid is being dumped into it. The Standard America Diet is 90 percent acidic, consisting of primarily sugar and grains. “No matter what your age, you need to train your body to burn fat as your fuel source, not sugar,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says.
A lot of people focus on caloric need and start counting calories religiously, but this is a mistake. It’s all about the quality, not the quantity, Dr. Gioffre says. “Each meal should focus on my 80/20 rule of health, where 80 percent or more of the foods you eat are alkaline, and no more than 20 percent acid.” When you look at your plate, it should be primarily made up of dark green leafy vegetables and healthy fats, moderate protein, and little vegetable carbohydrates.
Metabolism is usually the focus of weight loss as people get older. “Anticipation is the key to maintain a healthy metabolism as we age,” Dr. Gioffre says. “If you know your metabolism will slow, but lifestyle choices can have an influence on that, start making changes now. Eat better, move better, and think better, and your metabolism will be better.”
The crucial process slows by 5 percent each decade, and the lack of mobility and the effect it has in the lymphatic system isn’t helping. “At age 35, you’ll burn 100 fewer calories a day than at 25, and 200 fewer at 45.” That could translate to 8-12 extra pounds each year. “This is why as we get older, you need to make better decisions about what you eat and how you move.”
Eating less would be the quickest way to sabotage your health. “Being healthy is not about deprivation, it’s about moderation,” Dr. Gioffre says. “When you deprive your body by eating less, it goes into starvation mode. What does our metabolism want more of when it thinks we are starving? It stores energy. A great source of stored energy is body fat.”
So when you cut back on your diet, your metabolism never knows when it’s going to get its next meal, Dr. Gioffre says. “Because of this, it holds onto body fat, and slows down its metabolism. “Age should not have any bearing on what you need to eat.”
“Gaining weight is an acid problem,” Dr. Gioffre says. You need minerals – the calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium bicarbonate will neutralize the acid, preventing the fat from taking over.
And if you think dairy is OK, think again. Cottage cheese is out of the question, too, according to him. “The milk to make cottage cheese is first pasteurized, not only killing off bad bacteria, but also any possible beneficial components that may have been in the milk, Dr. Gioffre says. Once the cheese milk is prepared, a starter culture is added to generate lactic acid from lactose. “The pH is dropped to about 4.5, which is highly acidic, to allow the casein in the milk cheese to begin to precipitate.”

]]>Weight loss is not an exact science, bit it is a complex and imperfect process that requires time, patience, and having the correct information about food consumption.
More than a third of American adults (78.6 million people), and just about a fifth of children between 2 and 19 years old (12.7 million), are overweight or obese, according to the Journal of American Medicine. Many are trying to do something about it. The weight loss industry is a $20 million business. People are invaded with ads about what kind of diets “work” as soon as they wake up.
Yogurt and milk have a mixed reputation when it comes to how healthy they are. Many nutritionists say that, when it comes to shedding pounds, they should be avoided.
For 15 of the most fulfilling foods that will help you lose weight, click here
“Dairy products are highly acidic and they need to be avoided,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says. Anytime something acidic is introduced into your body, it has a buffer system to help neutralize those acids. One of those primary buffers is fat, he adds. “Your body would rather hold onto fat, encapsulating the acid or toxin, in order to protect the body from being harmed or damaged.” It is a self-protective mechanism designed to keep you healthy, in the short run. In the long run, it makes you heavier and more toxic, Dr. Gioffre says.
Like fruit juices, milk is homogenized and pasteurized, killing most of the nutrients right along with any bad bacteria. “You flat out don’t need it,” he says.
For the worst drinks for your body, click here
And if you think calcium is a good reason to drink milk, you may want to reconsider. Despite what we were all led to believe, milk leaches calcium from your bones, not the other way around, Dr. Gioffre says.
After 12 years of study, Harvard researchers noted a correlation between dairy consumption and increased hip fractures in women. While yogurt is a good source of probiotics, most, if not all, are loaded with sugar, artificial sweeteners, harmful fillers, and yeast which are “three things you need to avoid like the plague,” Dr. Gioffre adds.
They are all very congestive to your digestive system, and because of their acidic nature, your body will hold onto fat to neutralize the acid they produce in your body.
For the best strength moves to lose fat, click here
Some of you may think that having fat-free or low-fat yogurt or milk is acceptable. Again, they “never” are if you are trying to lose weight, Dr. Gioffre says. Something everyone needs to know about ‘fat free’ anything is that it doesn’t work.
“People were obsessed with fat-free over the last 50-60 years for weight loss,” he adds. “If you want to find out why everything has been fat free for so long, you have to trace it back to 1967, when three Harvard scientists were each paid the equivalent of $50,000 in today’s dollars to publish a review on sugar, fat, and heart disease.” The studies were handpicked by the sugar industry which minimized the link between sugar and chronic disease, while fully placing the blame on fat, specifically saturated fat, Dr. Gioffre adds.
Ever since then, the market has been flooded with fat-free products left and right. They replaced the fat with massive amounts of sugar, high fructose corn syrup (the worst form of sugar which directly goes to the liver where it is immediately turned to fat), and artificial sweeteners, all of which are acidic and very dangerous to your health, Dr. Gioffre says.
They also spike insulin levels in the body, packing more pounds on; even worse, they cause higher occurrence of chronic disease like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
“If you want to be healthy, you need to make fat your friend,” Dr. Gioffre says. “In fact, I recommend 50-70 percent of your total diet be loaded with healthy fats like chia seeds, and flax seeds, raw nut butters like almond and cacao, omega 3 fats from wild caught salmon, walleye, sardines, and anchovies, and good sources of saturated fat like MCTs from coconut oil.”
When you eat more healthy fats and avoid the bad ones, you will decrease inflammation and acidity in your body, and not only help balance your body’s pH, but also balance one of the most important ratios in your body, the Omega 3:6 ratio which should be ideally 1:1, Dr. Gioffre says. The average American is 1:25, respectively.

Kelly Ripa is getting raves from her Instagram followers for her new photo. Ripa posed in a crop top and leotards, showing off her amazing abs and thanking her fitness trainer in the caption. But beyond working with a trainer to tone her tummy, Kelly’s fabulous figure at 47 owes credit to her nutritionist.
Dr. Daryl Gioffre, who has taken on the role of diet guru to Ripa, talked with Page Six about the backlash that Kelly received over photos of her bikini
body on Instagram. The nutritionist also clarified the details of Ripa’s diet, which he feels is often misunderstood.
Kelly isn’t stressing over the slams she got over her Instagram bikini photos, said Gioffre. He linked Ripa’s desire to follow a healthy diet to her relaxed approach to coping with the backlash, noting that Kelly just goes with the flow (even when it turns negative).
In addition to praising Ripa for her healthy lifestyle, the nutritionist called her husband Mark Consuelos “incredible.” Mark and Kelly are “phenomenal role models for their kids,” he added, noting that Ripa’s husband is joining her in “doing all the right things” to look and feel healthy.
Kelly follows the Alkamind diet, created by Gioffre. However, he admitted that Ripa has customized his diet plan, which eliminates acidic beverages and acidic foods.
Gioffre wants to help others in addition to Kelly understand the alkaline diet.
He expressed appreciation for Ripa’s balanced approach to life, sharing that she follows his diet guidelines with one exception. Although Kelly was honest with him about her one cheat on the diet, telling Gioffre that she planned to drink her beloved coffee, the nutritionist said that she’s been diligent in sticking to most of the food plan.
“If I had to define Kelly Ripa in one word, it’s ‘balance’ and that’s what being healthy is all about,” added her nutritionist. “She lives this balanced lifestyle of doing 80/20.”
The 80/20 approach allows Ripa to enjoy her coffee while following the alkaline diet. Kelly authored the foreword to Gioffre’s book, Get Off Your Acid. The nutritionist also has helped Ripa’s daughter as well as Real Housewives Of New York stars Jill Zarin and Aviva Drescher with their diets.
Alkaline Diet Gets Credit For Kelly Ripa’s Bikini Body
Reporting on the bikini body backlash that Ripa survived, Peoplemagazine also credited her alkaline diet for her fit and fabulous body at 47. But it’s not just Kelly’s nutritionist who is praising the talk show host’s dedication to following her diet.
When Ripa’s husband Mark learned about the slams that his wife was getting for her bikini body on Instagram, he stepped up to respond by discussing Kelly’s healthy lifestyle.
Ripa’s high-alkaline diet makes vegetables the star. Kelly enjoys everything from broccoli to beets to kale. However, with the exception of that coffee, Ripa steers clear of foods that are acidic. Her forbidden foods list includes sugar, fish, and yogurt.
When Kelly Ripa’s husband Mark Consuelos shared a photo of her bikini body on Instagram, some fans felt that her swimsuit choice was inappropriate for her age.
Kelly began following an alkaline diet in 2015. She shared that the diet has changed her life as well as how she thinks about food. Ripa jump-started her new food plan by turning to a seven-day cleanse created by Dr. Daryl Gioffre.
“It’s a very manageable cleanse,” said Kelly.
Ripa admitted that when the term “cleanse” is mentioned, people assume that she’s cutting her calories and drinking just “a green juice a day.” However, Kelly said that when she went on the cleanse, she actually ate more food.
“It’s what you eat and how you eat it,” added Ripa.
Kelly shared that her alkaline diet is mostly vegan. She occasionally eats fish or puts cream in her coffee. However, when she returns to the seven-day alkaline cleanse, she follows it carefully.
Ripa’s nutritionist shared that his diet has helped patients achieve impressive weight loss success, as the Inquisitr reported. Some dieters have lost five to 14 pounds in just one week on the plan.

The two most important aspects of losing weight that people should remember are: It’s not about deprivation, it’s about moderation; and think quality, not quantity. “You can eat as much as you want as long as it is the right food, and your body will be a fat burning machine,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says.
When people think of shedding extra pounds, they think their diet needs be 100 percent perfect, and this is the quickest way to sabotage not only your weight loss, but your health, he adds. The right methods may take a little bit longer, but the weight loss will sustain, and that is the ultimate outcome.
Another important suggestion to remember, according to Marisa Moore, registered dietitian nutritionist, is to eat your vegetables first. “They fill you up.. Specifically, since most adults don’t get the recommended daily vegetables, I suggest starting meals with half a plate of them.”
Consuming protein is very important, but you want found meats in the following list of all-time best foods for weight loss. Both Moore and Dr. Gioffre are not fans. The lean protein movement is one that is seriously flawed, he says. “In moderation, it is ok, but when you consume more than 50 percent of your calories from lean protein, not only do you stress your digestive system and your liver, you also increase your likelihood of chronic disease such as cancer and heart disease.”
Also, when you consume protein in excess, it will get converted to glucose in your body and is stored as fat, utilized almost the same way as if you ate sugar or grains, Dr. Gioffre says. Research has found that plant-based diets, without counting calories, lead to greater weight loss.
The byproduct of lean protein metabolism is nitrogen which then gets turned into ammonia and urea, both highly acidic and toxic to your body. “With this said, focus on eating proteins with significant fats like Omega 3 Fatty Acids in the form of wild caught salmon, anchovies, sardines, walleye, and trout,” Dr. Gioffre says. “Increase plant based proteins from quinoa, dark green leafy vegetables, chia seeds, hummus, and smaller beans that have been soaked and sprouted like chickpeas.”
Be prepared to snack smart. You might be tempted by any food in your path when you’re hungry, but keep a bag or tin of almonds in your work bag or desk drawer. “This way you have a crunchy and satisfying snack ready at all times, and the vending machine doesn’t stand a chance,” Moore says.
You may think that fruit is safe for weight loss, but not always. “Ideally go for alkaline ones like lemons, limes, grapefruit, avocados, tomatoes, pomegranate, all things coconut (milk, butter, oil), and even watermelon,” Dr. Gioffre says. “If you are going to have an acid forming fruit (all the others), limit consumption to once a day, make sure they are in season, ideally eat before it ripens and always consume on an empty stomach.”
Understand that strict diets are not sustainable, Moore says. “I understand the frustration and desire to lose weight quickly by cutting out certain foods, but I like to take a step back and ask if [clients] will be able to maintain this diet for life. The answer is almost always no.”
Spicy Food
“I am a big fan of spicy foods for weight loss because spicy foods such as jalapenos and hot sauce increase your thermogenesis, which allows your body to build heat and burn more calories,” Gastroenterologist Dr. Prem Chattoo, owner of The Warren in New York City, says. “They also increase your metabolism, which allows you to burn energy from food at a faster rate.”
Apples
Apples have a very low glycemic index, which means they are digested slowly, Dr. Chattoo says. “They are also high in fiber, which allows your appetite to be suppressed while you eat the apples, and for your body to burn calories while you break down the fiber,” he adds.
Pecans
They are low in calories and high in fiber, which will satisfy your hunger faster, ORBERA weight loss balloon nutritionist Lara Hamilton, RD and CDE, says. “They also contain healthy, unsaturated fats which aid in lowering cholesterol.”
Dark, leafy greens
These foods are excellent for nutritional input, weight concerns, and assistance with output, Dr. Karena Wu, healthcare expert and owner of ActiveCare Physical Therapy in New York City, says. “Dark, leafy greens have tons of vitamins and minerals which help do a body good. They are also low in calories, which helps anyone looking to lose weight.” They also have fiber, which helps move things along, she adds.
Peppers
“Many peppers are highly alkaline and great for your metabolism,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, Founder of Alkamind and celebrity nutritionist, says. Good options are red bell peppers, yellow and orange, shishito, jalapeno, cayenne (excellent for weight loss), and black pepper. “Avoid the green ones as they are acidic.”
Lemons
Lemons have an acidic medium that helps to burn fat. “Try putting lemon in hot water each morning before each meal – you'll burn fat and have a suppressed appetite,” Dr. Chattoo says. Lemons are real superstars when it comes to vitamin C. Just one serving provides more than 180 percent of the daily value. They also provide, iron, potassium, fiber, and magnesium. The nutrients in lemons help prevent kidney stones, aid with weight loss by improving digestion, and balance pH levels.
Chickpeas/Hummus
“Hummus and other bean dips make satisfying alternatives to some other dips that offer few nutrition benefits,” Marisa Moore, registered dietitian nutritionist, says. Not only are beans high in protein and fiber, but bean dips are a blank canvas for other goodies like garlic and are perfect paired with fresh, crunchy vegetables, she adds. “Chickpeas in particular are high in fiber and pair well with a variety of different flavors and cooking methods from mashing to sautéing and roasting.”
Cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli
Known as one of the “superfoods,” these vegetables contain cancer-fighting substances and are quite filling, Dr. Wu says. These vegetables are also powerful in fiber and nutrients. Broccoli is high in dietary fiber, low in calories and fat, and loaded with vitamins and minerals, Hamilton adds. “It'll fill you up while helping you to lose weight at the same time.”
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are made up of 95 percent water and are extremely low in calories. “Water in itself can help boost metabolism, so with that plus all the nutrients in cucumbers, such as copper and potassium, filling you up, you'll be on the right weight loss track,” Hamilton says. Animal research has consistently shown that extracts from cucumbers may provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits as well.
Detox tea
When you are looking to lose weight, you want all hands on deck for your liver, Dr. Gioffre says. “One of my favorite detox protocols in my 7-Day Alkaline Cleanse to lose weight is the Detox Tea.” The black pepper will increase the potency of the turmeric by 2,000 percent, he adds. The tea is an acid fighter, an anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and very helpful in losing weight, because weight gain in ALL forms is an ACID problem, he adds. “Lose the acid, and you will lose the weight, Dr. Gioffre says.
Mustard
“Mustard is high on flavor and light on calories making it an ideal salad dressing mix in and sandwich spread,” Moore says. “Spritz salad greens with a squeeze of citrus juice or apple cider, pomegranate or balsamic vinegar for extra flavor and pizzazz.” Nearly half of the carbs in mustard seed come from dietary fiber, which makes you feel full and is an important nutrient that supports digestive health.
Celery
“Celery is an age-old weight loss food because its net loss in calories is higher than its net gain in calories,” Dr. Chattoo says. “It takes more energy to break down celery, so when you eat it, you burn calories.” Celery is high in phytonutrient antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown celery is a great source of flavonols and flavone antioxidants.
Beans
They are protein-rich, fiber-rich powerhouses that help in weight-loss, Dr. Wu says. “They can make you feel full quickly and are a healthy, non-meat source of protein. Beans are a fabulous source of vegetarian protein and fiber—two nutrients that help you stay full and satisfied. The protein and fiber in beans also stabilize the rise in blood sugar that occurs after eating. Moreover, as a meat substitute, they are a rich source of iron. Beans are low in fat and have high antioxidant content.
Carrots
“I am a fan of carrots, but in moderation (no more than 2 to 3x per week) because they are 12 percent sugar,” Dr. Gioffre says. “In moderation they are a good food, because they are a high water content vegetable, loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.” They are high in fiber which is great for weight loss; and they are very slow-digesting, which is good when you are trying to shed the pounds as they keep you feeling fuller longer, he adds.
Melons
Melons such as watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew have high water contents, which will make you feel full faster, Hamilton says. “On top of that, they are low-density energy foods, which means you get few calories for larger volumes of food. They also contain lots of vitamin C and vitamin A which help to boost the immune system.”
Water
Dehydration is a major cause of poor digestion. “Water washes out toxins,” Dr. Chattoo says. “If you drink twice the amount of water you're supposed to each day, around 15 or 16 glasses compared to 8 glasses, it’ll help you lose weight.” Thirst can masquerade as hunger and the body doesn’t know the difference. Avoid the confusion by drinking water before mealtime. You’ll also feel fuller so you won’t end up eating a lot of food.
Chia/Flax Seeds
They are great options you can add to a smoothie that help with weight loss, Dr. Gioffre says. “Use sunflower seeds in moderation as they have a high amount of omega 6 fatty acids which you need to avoid.” Some studies suggest that the anti-inflammatory benefits of flaxseeds might help prevent weight gain by reducing the risk for diseases like metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Just two tablespoons of ground flaxseed contain more than 140 percent of the daily value of the inflammation-reducing omega-3 fatty acids.
Salmon
Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids which help in reducing inflammation, Dr. Wu says. “It also contains iodine which helps with thyroid function and metabolic health.” Salmon is a true year-round superfood. It’s a great source of protein as well. It is also a natural stress-reliever: Studies have shown that people who took omega-3 supplements had a 14 percent reduction in anxiety.
Popcorn
“With 3 cups per serving, popcorn can be a low calorie and fiber rich snack,” Moore says. And you can do a lot with it. “Skip the movie theater butter style popcorn for your own stovetop or air popped variety.” Punch up the flavor and crunch with bold spices as in my Smoked Paprika Almond Popcorn Bowl, she adds.
Sardines
When it comes to fish, Dr. Gioffre recommends - other than salmon - sardines, anchovies, walleye, and trout. “All others are toxic, pro-inflammatory, and contain heavy metals and need to be avoided,” he adds. “Ideally try to source your fish from New Zealand and Spain.”
Eggs
Egg yolk contains leucine which is an amino acid necessary for muscle health and many other important vitamins, Dr. Wu says. “Egg whites are all protein and very few calories; yet, in order to make a mixed meal you should consume a carbohydrate, protein, and fat,” Lisa Mikus, RD, CNSC, CDN, says. The yolk contains fats, fat-soluble vitamins, phosphorus, and choline. Recent research shows that dietary cholesterol actually does not correlate as strongly to cholesterol in the blood as previously thought. “It’s more important to focus on if you are consuming enough healthy fat,” she adds.
Limes
Limes are alkaline-forming to your body, Dr. Gioffre says. When deciphering if a food is alkaline (which is good) or acid (which is bad), there are 2 things you have to look at – the mineral content, and the sugar content, he adds. Limes are 2 percent sugar, where oranges are 12 percent. The oranges, due to their high sugar content, will ferment once consumed and turn top acid and alcohol. In addition, ALWAYS consume fruits by themselves. Dr. Gioffre says. “They have a much faster transit time through your digestive system compared to other foods like protein and starches. That is why one of the worst things you can do is have fruit for dessert after a meal – it will get stuck in your stomach and ferment and rot while the slow moving protein or starchy foods digest.”
Blackberries/Blueberries
Blueberries are super rich on antioxidants, potassium, and vitamin C, which can help protect our cells from damaging free radicals, and fiber, which can promote fullness and good digestive health,” Millie Wilson, Registered Dietitian for My Fit Foods, says. Research has suggested they are important for fighting cancer and Alzheimer’s. A 2010 study found that people with memory problems due to their age, who drank 2.5 cups of blueberry juice a day, made significant improvement in memory and learning. Blackberries, too, are very rich on antioxidants. They are powerhouses of essential amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, and provide a boost of energy and fiber which help regulate blood sugar levels and digestive health.
Artichokes
This delicious plant is a mild diuretic and helps in the removal of toxins, according to Monica Amsterdam, CHC, AADP, FDN-P, director of nutrition at the Medical and Wellness Center of New Jersey. In addition, artichokes purify and protect the liver; they are high in fiber, and consequently keep you less bloated because they promote regularity.
Kefir/Greek yogurt
“Dairy can be part of a balanced diet,” Moore says. “Cultured dairy products like Greek yogurt and kefir are especially convenient sources of probiotics, protein, calcium, and other nutrients.” A study found that yogurt consumption was associated with weight loss. Researchers came to that conclusion after observing 120,000 people for 20 years. Be sure to choose yogurts that don’t contain excessive amounts of added sugar. Buy unflavored varieties and add your own sweeteners, like fresh fruit (for fiber).
Strawberries
“These are one of my favorite add-ins to yogurt and smoothies,” Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in Jersey City, NJ, says. “Strawberries are naturally sweet, so you can add them to your yogurt, smoothies, and more instead of adding additional sugar.” They’re also a good source of filling fiber—one cup of strawberry halves provides 12 percent of the daily value, she adds.
Olive oil
“This oil contains healthy fats, and a study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology shows that it may be helpful for weight loss,” Gorin says. “In the study, older adults who had type 2 diabetes or high cardiovascular risk ate a Mediterranean diet, plus additional extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet plus additional nuts, or a low-fat diet.” About five years later, all study subjects had lost weight, but the group eating extra olive oil lost the most weight, she adds.
Soup
“Choose broth-based soups, and have a cup before the start of your meal, Gorin says. “Research shows that doing so can help you eat less during the meal.”
Brown rice
This whole grain offers a good amount of satiating fiber. “Research in Annals of Internal Medicine shows that eating a high-fiber diet—one containing 30 or more grams daily—led to subjects losing about four pounds over the course of a year,” Gorin says. “My Creamy Rice with Parsnip, Onion & Pepper is one of my favorite ways to eat brown rice—and as a bonus, it includes fiber-rich veggies.”
Quinoa
“Quinoa is rich in vitamins and protein, but low in calories to make for a perfect food when looking to lose weight,” Michelle Roots, owner and personal trainer at CORE Conditioning, says. It is loaded with fiber and protein, both which aid in weight loss. According to livestrong, “the protein in quinoa helps stabilize your blood sugar and, because protein takes more energy to break down than carbs or fat, you'll actually burn more calories during digestion.” Tip: Make sure you practice portion control when eating quinoa; too much may result in too many calories.
Lentils
“A cup of lentils gives you the same amount of protein as 3 eggs and contains less dietary fat,” Roots says. “Lentils are also very high fiber, so you feel full for a longer period of time after eating.”
Green Tea
“Green tea is [a] metabolism booster that helps with the metabolism of fat,” Rick Hay, The Super Foodist, and Fitness Nutritionist, says. It is one of the best teas for weight loss; it aids in fat loss and has proven to boost your metabolic rate, which in turn increases the amount of fat you burn.
Cherries and Beetroot
“Cherries and beetroot both help with energy production,” Hay says. “[That] means you are more likely to have more energy for exercise to burn off excess calories.”
Fermented Foods
Fermented foods increase your beneficial bacteria, which aid in digestion and help fight off unwanted pathogens in your GI tract. For example, “foods like tempeh and miso soup help with good gut bacteria, which helps to keep digestive function going,” Hay says.
Sweet potato/yam
“These healthy potatoes are loaded with fiber to promote healthy digestion,” Roots says. “They are high in potassium and also improve blood sugar regulation to aid in weight loss.”
Coconut oil
“This metabolism boosting oil helps improve thyroid function and reduce appetite to help in thyroid function to aid in weight loss,” Roots says. Coconut oil also contains fatty acids that are absorbed quicker and easier in the digestive track.
Grapefruit
“This low calorie, low glycemic fruit contains fat burning enzymes and lots of fiber to help boost metabolism and reduce appetite,” Roots says. Research has also concluded that the consumption of grapefruit, whether eaten as a whole fruit, half, juice or capsule form, led to more weight loss and lower blood sugar in 91 obese people, according to livestrong.com.
Tuna
Tuna is “high in protein and omega -3 but low in calories; it can be eaten in many different ways to keep you feeling full and keep the metabolism revved up,” Roots says.
Spaghetti squash
“Spaghetti squash has a wide range of vitamins and minerals and is also low in fat, calories, and carbs to make for the perfect pasta substitute,” Roots says. It also contains vitamin C and vitamin A which help prevent free radical damage to cells.
Nuts/natural nut butter
Nuts are rich in protein and fiber which help ward off hunger, Roots says. While the omega-3 fatty acid content in it helps you burn fat faster.
Avocado
“Avocados are a great fat to add to your daily diet, as they encourage fat burning and fight insulin resistance,” Roots says. “They are also loaded with antioxidants and fiber to keep you feeling full for longer.”
Oats/steel cut oats
“Oats are low in calories and fat and also contain protein, whole grains, and fibre to make for a perfect low glycemic addition to any breakfast or snack bar,” Roots says.
Bananas
“Bananas are the perfect snack because they are high in fiber, low in fat, and prevent sugar spikes throughout the day,” Roots says. “They are filling and help prevent cravings and regulate blood sugar in order to aid in weight loss.”
Almond/coconut milk
“These milks are low in calories and contain no hormones or antibiotics to make for the perfect milk substitute,” Roots says.
Black pepper
“Black pepper contains a naturally occurring chemical compound called piperine, which is responsible for giving it its pungent flavor,” everydayroots.com says. Piperine has been shown to reduce fat levels in the blood stream. “This spice aids in boosting metabolism, helps digestion, and aids nutrient absorption to make for the perfect zero calorie topping to many foods,” Roots says.
Mangoes
This delicious fruit is filling – it’s over 80 percent water. “It’s also naturally sweet and a much better choice for dessert, versus cookies or brownies,” Gorin says. “You can also use it to sweeten oatmeal, like in my Mango Almond Oatmeal, instead of using sugary toppings like brown sugar.”
Almonds
“Choose foods like almonds to keep hunger in check through the day,” Moore says. With 6 grams of hunger-smashing protein and 4 grams of fiber per serving, almonds are a heart-healthy snack that’s ready whenever and wherever you are, she adds. “Skip the chips and crunch on a handful of almonds solo or with a piece of fruit for a satisfying snack.”
Orange Veggies
Some of the best vegetables to keep you full for longer are all the green leafies and orange veggies, like butternut squash, acorn squash, and sweet potatoes, Dr. Rob Silverman, a nutritionist, says. They are very filling. All are packed with health-promoting nutrients, like vitamin A and fiber. Squash is a good source of antioxidants needed for a healthy immune system.
Veggie Dips
Vegetables, especially green leafs, are a great source of fiber. It helps your body get rid of everything that passes through your digestive tract. Fiber is only found in plant-based foods, which is why eating foods high on fiber means you’re consuming less calories and more vitamins as well. So next time you’re hungry, go to the vegetable tray, add some kind of dressing or, even better, hummus, and see what happens.
Lean Beef
Other than because it tastes awesome, lean beef is a great diet choice due to the large amount of protein (nearly half of the recommended daily value), iron and B-vitamins it has. They satisfy your appetite for a long time (in addition to being a great source to build muscle). According to a research, lean beef also helps improve your cholesterol. Contrary to popular belief, unprocessed red meat does not raise the risk of heart disease or diabetes, a study says.

]]>Aloe vera juice benefits range from the external—as a skin treatment—to the internal—like oxygenating the body and maintaining a good immune system. Working its magic from the inside, aloe vera has the power to improve our health by aiding the body in a number of ways.
“Research has shown time and time again that those who have aloe vera in their system enjoy better oxygen transportation throughout the body,” explains celebrity nutritionist, Dr. Daryl Gioffre. “This helps the cardiovascular system, including the heart as well as other organs in the body. For this reason, aloe vera should be consumed as a drink, which will help remove toxic elements from the body.
“It is very effective in detoxifying your bowels, which improves absorption of food, elimination, and an overall feeling of energy to the body because the body is absorbing more nutrients that promote better function,” says Dr. Gioffre. He recommends no more than 2-4 ounces of fresh aloe vera (mixed with water or low sugar fresh juice) daily, on an empty stomach, and in small quantities, drinking slowly.
“Aloe is rich in antioxidants, which help your skin cells protect against skin-damaging free radicals in the environment (sun, smoke, etc).”
Many diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Chrohn’s and diverticulitis are caused by inflammation. Aloe vera provides the body with plant steroids such as Campesterol, Lupeol and ß-Sitosterol, which inhibit the inflammation process. Dr. Gioffre notes that, “Aloe vera can reduce inflammation of the tissue and joints, helping anyone dealing with arthritis or joint pain.”
Consumption of aloe vera juice can be successful in lowering blood cholesterol. Dr. Gioffre explains that the plant’s soluble fiber absorbs toxins, sugar, cholesterol, and inflammatory fats. “Once these particles bond with the soluble fiber, the fiber begins to swell, which prevents these toxic particles from entering the bloodstream,” he says. Thereby, preventing cholesterol buildup and plaquing.
When you’re feeling a bit under the weather, consider sipping some aloe vera juice. Drinking aloe vera helps maintain a healthy acid-alkaline balance, which boosts immunity. Not only that, but it also strengthens your immune system because of the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acids the plant carries that’ll help detoxify the body.
There are a number of ways that aloe vera betters your digestive system. For one, the same soothing effect the plant has on your sunburn applies on the inside of the body by soothing the stomach lining and intestines. “Essentially, aloe vera is incredibly effective at managing digestion and helping regularity in much the same way as fiber,” explains Dr. Gioffre. Aloe vera facilitates the movement of food particles through the digestive tract and promotes their faster elimination. Thereby, helping with issues such as heartburn, lining of the gut, constipation, and reduce acidity in the blood.
According to Dr. Gioffre, “Aloe is rich in antioxidants, which help your skin cells protect against skin-damaging free radicals in the environment (sun, smoke, etc).” Although aloe vera gel helps the skin externally, consuming aloe vera juice help skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, eczema, dermatitis. Packed with powerful minerals and vitamins, when ingested, aloe vera promotes stronger and healthier skin as well as hair and nails.

]]>Setting health goals is among the most popular resolutions come the New Year. But here is an alarming stat – out of the 45% of Americans who make New Year’s resolutions, only 8% will actually keep them! Goals and resolutions can be very powerful, but they have to be done strategically and with purpose for them to have an impact on your life, especially when it comes to your health.
When you’re setting goals, they need to be what I call ‘SMART’ goals – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound. For example, a common goal I see with my patients this time of year is weight loss. To accomplish your goal, you need to know exactly how much weight you are going to lose, and you want to create a date of when you want to lose the weight by. A goal without a timeline is only a wish. Once you have that nailed down, you need a create a MAP (Massive Action Plan), or the strategy to get you there. The more specific you can get with your strategy the better, because a non-specific goal is like a ship without its rudder.
Next, your goals need to be something that compel you so much that no obstacle can get in the way of you reaching those goals. This is why 80% of your success is your WHY, and 20% is the strategy. If your why is big enough, failure is not an option, so it’s crucial that you become crystal clear on why your goal is so important for you to obtain.
Lastly, your goals should never be about deprivation. Removing something from your life that you enjoy will only cause resentment, and a sure-fire way to sabotage your goal. When you add instead of take-away, not only will you get healthier, but you will do so in a way that will sustain itself, and this is crucial so that you don’t fall into that dreaded yo-yo syndrome again. Here are some of my favorite health habits to alkalize your life in the New Year!
Here are 17 simple habits you can add to your life in 2017. Choose just one as your new goal, START IT NOW, and make sure to be consistent with it until you move on to the next one.
Have a green smoothie for breakfast every day for a week.
Drink one more glass of filtered, alkaline water (add a lemon or lime slice) each day.
Try to cook one new, yummy alkaline recipe each week.
Add flax, or chia seeds to at least one meal every day.
Go raw! Eat more raw foods or cook under 118 degrees Fahrenheit. You can do this by doing a flash steam or sauté, where you cook your vegetable in 4 minutes or less.
Eat more meals at home instead of eating out or ordering in. It’s easier to eat healthy, nourishing foods at home.
Make a habit of having an afternoon snack of fresh veggies and hummus – cucumbers, celery, carrots, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, or whatever your favorites are.
Cook using coconut oil instead of vegetable or olive oils, which both turn into unhealthy trans fats when cooking.
Gradually replace junk foods and fast foods with alkaline foods. The more you eat them, the more you’ll want to eat them. For example, swap out a junk snack for a healthy alkaline snack like a celery stick with raw almond butter
Eat more greens! Go for either spinach, kale, watercress, Swiss chard, or another dark leafy green every day.
Make sure you are getting some good healthy fats in your diet each and every time you have fruit to balance out the sugar. Avocado, or coconut are great sources of good-for-you fat.
Start making pitchers of spa water to have on hand all the time with your favorite combinations of lemons, limes, grapefruit, or cucumber.
Replace meat in your meals with hearty, substantial veggies a couple of times a week.
Add one more gym or workout session in each week.
Eat your favorite alkaline veggies one additional time per week – you already love it, so why not eat it a little more?
Add a rainbow salad to two meals each day. Rainbow means all colors of the vegetables spectrum including red bell pepper, cucumbers, sprouts, celery, beet root, carrots, etc.
Invest in your long term health and well-being by using an alkaline superfood supplement each day. Jump-start your day with Alkamind Daily Greens and finish it with Alkamind Daily Minerals.
The best thing about any of these habits you start is that they’re going to make you feel great – and once you feel great, you’re not going to want to go back!
Commit to the alkaline diet with this meal plan, thens tock your pantry with these essentials.

]]>From Dr. Daryl Gioffre.
Every day, 25 million Americans suffer from acid reflux. Over the course of each month, that number climbs to 60 million, and in an average year, half of all Americans will feel the burn of reflux.
This is a real problem in our society today, especially when you consider that the pills used to treat heartburn and acid reflux actually make the problem worse, not better.
Let’s take a look at the root causes of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that we know as heartburn or acid reflux. Then, I’ll explain why the current solution does not work and what to do instead.
The True Cause of Acid Reflux
As we get older, our bodies tend to get weaker instead of stronger, slower instead of faster, and when it comes to our stomachs, we tend to produce less stomach acid instead of more. This lack of adequate stomach acid is commonly misunderstood and can have devastating consequences on our health.
It’s compounded by the acidic lifestyle most of us are living today. When your pH balance is off because of poor food choices like fast foods, processed foods, and sugar, stomach cells produce less gastrin, which stimulates the production of stomach acid.
This sets off a chain reaction. When less stomach acid is produced, we don’t break down and digest our foods as well. With foods not being digested properly, our blood doesn’t receive as many vitamins and minerals.
Next, food moves on to the small intestine for continued digestion, but because food wasn’t properly broken down in the stomach, this doesn’t work either, so there is an even greater deficiency of vitamins and minerals.
At this point, you’re more prone to bacterial and viral infections because stomach acid is responsible for killing bacteria that enter the digestive system.
As a result, the vital microbiome, the trillions of cells in your intestines, shift from healthier bacteria to an unhealthy balance of bad bacteria.
This unhealthy bacteria overgrowth produces gas that can literally raise the pressure on the small intestine and stomach, driving the contents of the stomach, including hydrochloric acid, enzymes, and bacteria, up into the esophagus. This is what you feel when you experience heartburn.
Wondering if this is the case with your acid reflux? Try this simple test. Take one tablespoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar with a little water at the beginning of a meal. If it alleviates your symptoms during and after eating, you should investigate further and have your stomach acid levels tested. You likely have a deficient amount of stomach acid.
There are a couple of common types of heartburn medications out there, and neither of them solves the problem. In fact, they make things worse and cause an increasing dependence on them.
H2 Blockers like Tagamet, Zantac, and Pepcid AC have bad digestive side effects like nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and even heartburn. They also interfere with the metabolism of your important hormones, including estradiol and testosterone.
PPI’s like Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid shut down stomach acid production for the most part, which is the opposite of what you need.
So what can you do instead?

]]>The key formula to living a long and healthy life is not a secret – eat right, sleep well and exercise more. All three will inevitably help you feel better and stay in shape. But the older you get the harder it becomes to respond to healthy habits because the body has been taking so much damage for so long. However, some small daily habits can have a tremendous effect in the long run.
Take Minerals Daily
Most people who have sugar or carb cravings are actually deficient in magnesium, Daryl Gioffre, author of Get Off Your Acid: 7 Steps in 7 Days to Lose Weight, Fight inflammation, and Reclaim Your Health & Energy, says. Not only will minerals help with cravings, they can also help with acid reflux and sleeping issues, he adds. “They are also great for preventing hangovers.” “The Alkamind Daily Minerals supplement is the 4 most crucial alkaline minerals in their purest, most balanced state.”
Learn and practice proper breathing
“No one in school teaches us how to breathe, but proper breath can help with everything from anxiety to better sleep,” Dr. Gioffre says. Oxygenating your body with proper breathing is one of the most important powerful ways to alkalize and detox your body, he adds. “Do the 3:6:5 Power Breath which is featured in my new book GET OFF YOUR ACID. In a seated position with both feet on the floor, breathe in the nose for 3 seconds, hold it for 6 seconds, and exhale out the mouth for 5 seconds.” Repeat this routine 10 times to help calm your spirit and relax your nerves.
Stay away from beer
Beer may be a stable at many college fraternities, but beer is the single most acidic alcohol there is, Dr. Gioffre says. Its unique combination of sugars and wheat, which contains gluten, are very acidic. “Wheat in particular spikes insulin levels, causes massive leaky gut and contains pro-inflammatory Omega-6 fatty acids.” Grains are also stored in beer, and most definitely become contaminated with mold and fungal mycotoxins which are carcinogenic, he adds. The least acidic alcohol you can drink is gin; it contains no sugar, it’s distilled and it’s made from botanicals like, licorice, or coriander, which contain minerals. “While avoiding alcohol is your best bet, but if you are going to have a drink, don’t reach for the beer,” he says.
Cut back on the sweets, sugary beverages, and white starches
These all contain high amounts of sugar. “Sugar has been proven to be 8X times more addictive than cocaine, and it mimics nutrients you are deficient in,” Dr. Gioffre says. “So your body craves more and more sugar, when what it really needs is magnesium and more healthy fats.” For some tips to stop eating sugar, click here
Gym or 10 minutes on a rebounder
If getting to the gym every day is tough, do just 10 minutes a day on the rebounder, Dr. Gioffre says. A rebounder, otherwise known as the mini-trampoline, is his favorite form of exercise. It is efficient, as you can keep one of these under your bed, he adds. “NASA did a study, and showed that the rebounder is 68% more effective than running at cardiovascular exercise and losing weight.” It is also a powerful lymphatic drainer (read body detoxifier), he says. “The best part is you don’t need to go to the gym, and all it requires is 10 minutes a day to reap the benefits.”
Learn to meditate
“You don’t need to be sitting on top of the Himalayas in a lotus position to meditate,” Dr. Gioffre says. Find five to ten minutes to sit quietly and meditate, which can reduce stress that causes all sorts of health problems including weight gain, he adds. “Meditation lowers stress, it can decreases anxiety, it can lower blood pressure, it helps to eliminate toxins in the body, and it changes the way the brain responds to stressors.”
Change careers if you don’t love yours
One of the biggest regrets people have in terms of what they wish they had done already has to do with their professional life. That why you should “quit the career you don't love today,” Devin Martin, life coach with LifeStyle Integrity, says. “Life is too short to spend the majority of your waking hours on the wrong path.”
Find your social circle
Seek out new groups that resonate with the parts of you that are hard to accept, Martin says. “Every social circle has a center of gravity. Rather than trying to fight against a group that pulls you down, seek one that pulls you up.” This will help you accept who you are as a person.
It’s OK to say ‘no’
You have to say “no” sometimes. You can’t possibly help everybody who has ever asked you for help or a favor. It becomes overwhelming. You have to think of your own well-being sometimes, right? “Listen to your body. Your gut will tell you when to say ‘no’,” Martin says.
Take risks before they become too big
The older people get the more frightened it becomes to them to take risks. While understandable, it’s not a good strategy. “The longer you wait the bigger the risk,” Martin says. “We become more entrenched and have more to let go of every year that we wait.”
“Fail quickly, fail often”
“Most people don't look back at their failures with regret nearly as much as they look back at what they didn't try with regret,” Martin says. “Every single step you take is an opportunity to learn and to re-calibrate.” The more decisions you take the more corrections you can make; the more corrections you can make the wiser you become, he adds. “Play the long game. Hurry up and start failing.”
Use your weaknesses
“If you know what you aren't great at then you know exactly what who your partner should be,” Martin says. Great leaders surround themselves with people who are smarter than themselves. “Be humble. Use your weaknesses to raise other people up and build your team,” he adds.
Accept that not everything goes your way
This is one thing people should remember about negotiating or simply communicating with others, Martin says. “Come to peace with the worst possible outcome before you start.” If you feel that you have nothing to lose your mind will be clear, your heart light and you will remain calm and be far more capable of steering things towards a desirable outcome,” he adds.
Social Media is a waste of your time
“F**k social media. You should be too busy to spend your time staring at pictures of other people,” Martin says.
Fear = Excitement without the Breath
This is what Martin would tell people who are afraid to make a big change in their lives. “You are scared because you are moving towards something which matters to you. You might need to go slowly and take deep breaths more often, but you are headed in the right direction.”
Watch the belly
People’s metabolism slows down as people get older and the most common area where people gain wait is the belly. “It’s important to not consume excess calories or insulin spiking nutrients such as sugars and non-fibrous carbs,” Kara Landau, gut health expert dietitian and founder Uplift Food, says. This is will help prevent the associated promotion of belly fat storage.
Eat foods rich in resistant starch
Eating foods rich in resistant starch, which is a specific type of carbohydrate that has both a gut healthy prebiotic effect, as well as being known to help make our cells be more responsive to insulin, can help prevent fat storage around the waist,” Landau says. Examples include green banana flour, raw rolled oats, or cooked and then cooled potatoes.
Try and minimize stress
“As stress hormones play a role in reducing or promoting fat storage around the waist, it is important to try and minimize stress, rather than solely focus on food choices when trying to lose fat from around the waistline,” Landau says. The extra pounds people gain under stress is usually abdominal fat because the adrenaline and cortisol make you hungry for carbs and fat.
Get enough Vitamin D
Research has shown that 3/4 of U.S. teens and adults are “D-ficient.” This is a scary number, considering the number of health woes the lack of the vitamin has been linked to, including obesity and metabolic syndrome. The sun is the best source of Vitamin D, but there are several surprising ones as well. Vitamin D functions as a hormone, and every single cell in the body has a receptor for it, which is why it affects many functions and processes that keep a person healthy and happy.
Consider supplements and probiotics
For use of any and most commonly taken supplements, associations were positive for body mass index of under 25, greater physical activity, and health status reported as excellent or very good. If you eat a variety of healthy foods, chances are you won’t need supplements because you’re already getting everything you need. A recent study suggests that consuming probiotics promotes weight loss and reduces Body Mass Index (BMI).
Lower the room temperature
A study found that men exposed to a cool environment overnight for a month had an increase in brown fat, which burns chemical energy to create heat and help maintain body temperature, with corresponding changes in metabolism. Also, hot air dries out the skin, leaving it vulnerable to wrinkles. Dry air also lead to inflamed skin. Tip: Keep a glass of water in the room for some humidity.
Build muscle
Strength training workouts will increase your muscle mass and as a result, also increase your metabolism. It’s simple – the more lean muscle you have, the more calories you burn during the day, even when you’re resting. As you age the body is losing muscle and that slows down its natural calorie-burning ability.
Stand up more
Excessive sitting impacts our body’s metabolic system. A study has shown a significant increase in caloric expenditure in subjects that were standing at a standing classroom desk, compared with sitting at a standard classroom desk. Don’t sit yourself to obesity and even death, and apply these tips to avoid prolonged sitting.
Grow a thick skin
You can’t let everything get to you. Avoid needless suffering and build immunity to other people’s opinions and actions. First is to learn to love and accept oneself. Once you have a high opinion of yourself, others’ opinions are less relevant. Work on your confidence and boost it by acknowledging others' talents, gifts, successes and progress. It’s important to point out the good work you’re doing.
Step out of your comfort zone
“It’s critical to your growth to step out of your comfort zone from time to time – the courage comes from shifting your perspective,” John Kalinowski, life coach and mindfulness experts, says. For example, learn to reframe those “out of your comfort zone” experiences as a positive instead of negative. Neuroscience has demonstrated that brain elasticity is encouraged by new things.

Thanksgiving may just be the only day of the year when people can find any excuse to indulge in their favorite foods. The typical holiday meal is made up of delicious dishes that are usually better when eaten together. But the celebratory dinner ends up being about 3,000 calories or more, which a person happily consumes over the course of few hours. The price they later pay is bloated stomach, uncomfortableness, and possibly weight gain.
Margarine
“I would avoid at all cost anything that has a ton of preservatives, or that isn’t really ‘real’ food,” and that include margarine, Joe Bauer, nutritionist and personal trainer in Seattle, says. Margarine, which is on the list of foods that are aging you, is made with partially hydrogenated oil, which contains trans fats.
Preserved meats
Bauer will also avoid preserved meats at all costs. Nitrates help these foods keep their color for longer but they are not doing your body any favors. They can convert to nitrite, causing the formation of nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic chemicals, according to the CDC. These processed foods are also extremely high in sodium, which leads to bloating, damaged blood vessels, and high blood pressure, to name a few.
Alcohol
“Because of the way the body prioritizes alcohol in the digestion process, I would very much suggest avoidance during heavy eating, Bauer says. Studies link alcohol consumption to bigger waists because when you drink booze, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat. Booze also has a lot of sugar. “I will certainly be saving my alcohol consumption for another time where I won’t be consuming large amounts of food,” he adds
This is a carb-filled holiday and you should be careful about what you consume
Canned cranberry sauce
A lot of experts disapprove of cranberry sauce. “It's mostly sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS),” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutritionist and founder of the Alkamind Get Off Your Acid 7-Day Cleanse, says. High fructose corn syrup has been found to have similar addictive qualities to heroin and cocaine and has been linked to weight gain and the obesity epidemic, he adds. “Fructose is the most dangerous form of sugar, as it elevates triglyceride levels and indirectly will cause insulin resistance in your body.” When this happens, your body will store these triglycerides as fat rather than being burned by the body for energy.
Buttery or creamy sides
This is what Personal Trainer and a Nutritionist Elizabeth Borge says avoids at Thanksgiving. Generally, she would limit herself to small portions of sides or better yet eat only small portions of one or two sides. “To be honest most sides are terrible though, in fact I can’t think of one I would recommend,” she adds.
Bottled gravy
This is what Mia Russo Stern, Founder of Brooklyn Culinary Arts, would never eat. “It’s so simple to make a quick homemade gravy with the pan juices from the turkey, ghee and a bit of flour.” Gravy is also pretty terrible because it can be added to many items increasing the calories of other foods like turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing; and it can add 100-
200 or more calories per plate.
Turkey’s skin
The skin is just a lot of calories which you may want to avoid. It adds about 35 calories to a typical 3.5-ounce serving. A 3-ounce serving of skinless white meat has about 25 grams of protein (a good thing), about 3 grams of fat (which isn’t much at all), and less than 1 gram of saturated fat. The skin will add 3 more grams of fat to this equation.
Mac and cheese
“Mac and cheese is loaded with milk, butter and cheese; in other words, lots of calories and fat 400-1,000 calories,” Borge says. Another problem with this side is that it contains too many carbs, Deborah Malkoff-Cohen, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, says. Healthier sides are carrots, sprouts and green beans, she adds.
Sweet potato casserole
Sweet potato casserole can have marshmallows, brown sugar, cream and butter, and can be 400-500 calories per serving, according to Borge. The dish is loaded with brown sugar and marshmallows and is not a healthy choice. One
cup has 300 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 37 grams of sugar.
Mashed potatoes
This is also a very unpopular dish at the table among nutritionists. They either avoid it completely or have very little of it. “The potatoes themselves are a white carbohydrate, meaning they are higher glycemic index and the sugar breaks down quicker and enters the bloodstream quicker,” Monica Moore, owner and registered dietitian nutritionist at Body by Monica, says. They are lower in fiber than their sweet potato counterpart. “And they typically are made with higher fat ingredients, such as butter, milk or cream, and gravy.” These can be a blood sugar raiser and a calorie bomb, Moore adds. “I would choose a baked or mashed sweet potato with cinnamon instead.”
Whip cream on pies
Desserts are also plentiful, Borge says. “I would choose one, and limit or eliminate ice cream or whip cream on pie.” Each cookie can be 100-200 calories, she adds. Desserts are basically all sugar, Malkoff-Cohen says, which is never good for the body. If you can’t resist them, eat very small portions.

]]>Our Alkaline Guru Explains!
From Dr. Daryl Gioffre
There’s a lot of buzz out there about the topic I’m going to address today called Intermittent Fasting. If done correctly, it can have a very powerful impact on women’s health, weight, skin, energy, and longevity.
It’s one of the most powerful detoxification methods around and beyond that, it’s a secret weapon for losing weight.
If you’re a woman, general fasting could lead to hormonal imbalance and could lead to fertility issues. With that said, if done the right way, it can be a powerful way for women to enjoy the positive aspects of intermittent fasting without putting their health at risk.
Intermittent fasting is you restrict your eating to a specific window of time each day, for as few or many days as you like (but NOT restricting how much you eat).
There are numerous studies on the advantages of doing intermittent fasting. For example, research presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 2011 annual scientific sessions found that this type of fasting triggered a 1,300% increase in human growth hormone in women. In addition, women in the study slept better, they had higher energy, better mental clarity, and they felt healthier overall.
Other benefits of intermittent fasting include:
Now let’s clear up one misconception right now: intermittent fasting is not a deprivation diet like many people are led to believe.
In reality, it’s a way of incorporating the healthy alkaline lifestyle you are already on the road to achieving in a specific way or schedule to have a more beneficial impact on your body.
It’s an excellent way to reboot your metabolism so that your body can start burning fat as its primary fuel source, and not sugar or carbs, which so many of us are currently burning instead.
Intermittent fasting helps you lose weight by increasing enzymes that burn fat, and your body becomes far better at using stored fat as your primary fuel source, rather than relying on carbs and sugar as a quick fix for energy.
It’s pretty simple. You can do this by simply timing your meals and allowing for regular periods of fasting.
I recommend you select your own unique 8-hour window to eat, because 8 is the magic number, and you fast the remaining 16 hours. You can do it one day a week, a few days of the week, or you can even do it daily if you’re trying to lose weight.
YOU are in control of this. It is not as intimidating as it sounds.
You can decide if your window is 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, or whatever time works for you.
Basically, you want it to accommodate your personal schedule and routine.
During the 8 hours that you can eat, it’s important you make smart and healthy food choices every time. You will be eating alkaline foods, ideally 80% of the time, and acid-forming foods no more than 20% of the time.
Minimize or even avoid altogether carbs and grains that are loaded with gluten like wheat, pasta, bread, and potatoes. Definitely cut out the sugar, one of the most acidic substances on the planet and the food that literally feeds bacteria, yeast, and even cancer cells.
Heavily cut back on processed foods, dairy, artificial sweeteners, and limit your consumption of meat.
Instead, opt for healthy, complete proteins that are mostly plant-based like:
Most importantly, switch to healthy fats like:
The healthy fats are easily metabolized for energy, and are essential to getting your body into a fat-burning state.
Why You Should Take it Slow at First
It may take a few weeks to adjust to this lifestyle, and to avoid any potential hormonal issues that come along with regular fasting, it has to be done gradually. So start easy, once a week, or once every other week and really listen to your body’s needs. The key takeaway is never intermittent fast on consecutive days (for example, you can do it on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday). It may take a few weeks or so before you shift to fat-burning mode, but once you do, the benefits are endless. For one, your cravings for unhealthy acidic foods and carbs will gradually disappear. This is because you’re now burning your stored fat and do not need to rely on new fast-burning carbs for fuel. This is the most secret weapon to lose weight and safely detox your body, on your own schedule.

]]>The Live with Kelly & Ryan host, who was criticized on Instagram for donning a gold bikini on a beach getaway, follows a strict diet and exercise regimen to stay in tip-top shape, as her husband Mark Consuelos pointed out.
“She works extremely hard in her professional life and her commitment to exercise, healthy diet is admirable and the benefits show. Yes she’s wearing a bikini at age 47 and will no doubt wear one for many years to come,” he wrote in a reply to Ripa’s critics.
So how exactly is Ripa always “killing it,” as Consuelos said? She first starts with an high-alkaline diet, which focuses on vegetables like beets, broccoli, cucumber, kale, kiwi, bell pepper and more, while avoiding acidic foods like yogurt, fish and sugar.
“It has changed my life, it’s changed the whole way I think about food,” Ripa said on her show in 2015.
The mom of three learned about the diet, which starts with a seven-day cleanse, from celebrity nutritionist Dr. Daryl Gioffre.
“It’s a very manageable cleanse. It’s very manageable,” Ripa said. “You’re not hungry. It’s not like … people go, ‘What are you eating? You’re just drinking, you know, a green juice a day?’ No, it’s not like that. You eat. I actually eat much more on this cleanse than I do in my actual life, but it’s what you eat and how you eat it.”
She has since figured out ways to make the alkaline diet work for her life, with some small adjustments.
“I like to drink coffee. I occasionally will have fish. The alkaline diet is primarily a vegan diet, but I like cream in my coffee. I like to have a glass of wine. So I don’t adhere to it strictly, but when I do a cleanse, it will be seven days, and then I go back to my normal life. But my normal life, like I said, is not that different than the alkaline cleanse,” Ripa told PEOPLE in 2015.
The TV host is also extremely dedicated to her workouts, and loves AKT — Anna Kaiser Technique — and SoulCycle classes, along with running. She called her workout classes her version of “clubbing.”
“I love the dance class,” Ripa said of AKT. “Because I think I’ve aged out of going clubbing, really, that’s my nightclub. Everybody there is my age, so it’s like a bunch of us old ladies working out.”
Ripa said her workouts are vital for her physical and mental health.
“There are a lot of people that don’t have to work out, and I am so happy for them, but I have to work out for my body type,” Ripa said. “It’s part of my routine. It’s part of my ritual. It doesn’t just make me look better, but it makes me emotionally feel better.”

]]>Being young is not easy nowadays. Now is the time people in the 20s are starting to learn how to become responsible grown-ups and how to navigate this complex world. Parents and peer are quick to offer their advice, but “adulating” is not rocket science.
Pay your credit card every month
Don’t get caught in the vicious cycle of owning money to banks – don't rack up debt. It may be hard to set money aside for rainy days, but you don’t want to spend your 30’s paying off old debts. Debt will also ruin your credit score, which you will need to be high if you ever want to purchase a car or even rent a house.
Don’t eat just before bedtime
Avoid eating within 2 hours of bedtime, Dr. Tania Elliott, Chief Medical Officer, at EHE, says. This will also help improves the quality of you sleep as well as aid in weight loss. Besides, trying to fall asleep on a full stomach is just uncomfortable. It may cause gas or heartburn, which will keep you awake.
Sleep in complete darkness
This also improves the quality of your sleep and can decrease your hunger hormones and cortisol (stress) levels in your body, Dr. Elliott says. Light disrupts the pineal gland’s ability to produce melatonin. Light can pass directly through your optic nerve to your hypothalamus, which controls your biological clock, signaling your brain that it’s time to wake up.
Don’t exercise just before you go to bed
Avoid exercising within four hours of bedtime to improve a restful sleep, Dr. Elliott says. Exercises right before you’re about to fall asleep has a counterproductive effect - it causes you to feel more awake and alert.
Walk more
Get to know your wearable device, or use your phone as one, Dr. Elliott says. “Physical activity is not just important for maintaining weight—it helps to reduce injury risk and improves stress and mental health.” Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your health, she adds.
Sit less
You may be comfortable sitting but your body will make you regret it later in life. The price of leading an inactive lifestyle is high and it comes in the form of physical pain and obesity. Sitting more than 11 hours a day increases risk of premature death by 40 percent. To find out what sitting actually does to your body, click here.
Move faster
Walking fast – and aerobic exercises in general – help people burn more calories, but also keep low cholesterol levels. Regular physical activity makes your heart stronger. A stronger heart can pump more blood with less effort. If your heart can work less to pump, the force on your arteries decreases, lowering your blood pressure. This ultimately results in a lower risk of developing heart disease.
Focus on core body strength
This is crucial in helping prevent injuries, Dr. Elliott says. “Opioids are our one of the top killers in this age group—the best way to avoid going down this path is to prevent injury in the first place,” she adds.
Improve your posture
Proper posture is key to preventing injuries as well, Dr. Elliott says. Standing up straight and not slumping your shoulders will keep you fitter in the long run. Otherwise, even though you don’t feel it right away, poor posture is taking a huge toll on your spine, shoulders, hips, and even knees. You are guaranteed to feel the effects of that later in life. They come in the form of chronic back pain, fatigue, stiffness, and headaches.
Wear sunscreen
Sunscreen is not just for when the sun is out. You should wear it every time you’re outside, even in the winter months. Everyone gets incidental exposures of sun that in some cases can cause sunburn and significant skin damage. The UV rays penetrate the clouds and windows – they are going to get you if you’re not ready
Focus on mental health
Anxiety and depression are more common than you think, Dr. Elliott says, so be sure to get screened. In addition to getting screened, exercise. Running really helps with anxiety disorders, according to studies. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the U.S., or 18 percent of the population.
Get vaccinated
“Stay up to date with vaccination!” Dr. Elliott says. This doesn’t only mean getting the flu shot every year. Make sure that you don’t need any special vaccines if you travel. Women should consider the vaccine against the human papillomavirus, according to Dr. Elliott. “The HPV vaccine is over 90 percent effective in preventing cervical cancer,” she adds.
Don’t starve
Many people in their 20’s do whatever it takes to lose weight. Full on deprivation isn’t the answer, Dr. Daryl Gioffre, author of Get Off Your Acid: 7 Steps in 7 Days to Lose Weight, Fight inflammation, and Reclaim Your Health & Energy, says. “But if in your 20’s you can maintain a balance of eating foods that are 80% alkaline and using the other 20% to indulge in your favorites.” That way you are setting up healthy habit, he adds. “Aim for 7-10 daily servings of Alkaline foods such as dark green leafy vegetables, cucumbers, celery, artichokes, avocados. If getting 7 servings in is tough, you can take powdered greens such as Alkamind Daily Greens.”
Don’t focus on regrets
Talking about regrets doesn’t help moving on. Always look to the future, Jami Bertini, a certified Life Coach and mindfulness expert, says. Practice mindfulness, which is the act of focusing your awareness on the present, living in the moment and cutting out all negative distractions.
Spend more time with family
This is a major regret people have later in their lives, Bertini says. “Work less and be with your family more.” Research has shown that family time has profound benefits. The study focused on 1, 600 elderly participants for six years. Fourteen percent of the seniors who died had regular visitors. In contrast, 23 percent had no family or friends who came by to see them. Also, chatting with family can help reduce stress.
Acknowledge your accomplishments
Self-acceptance is key to a happy life, Bertini says. People should spend time to acknowledge what they do and what they have accomplished in order to accept who they are, she adds. “Usually people move too quickly from one task to another and don’t take time to see what they’ve achieved.”
Forgive yourself
Positive people understand the importance of forgiveness. As hard as it may be, they forgive themselves and others regardless of the circumstances. Holding grudges and focusing on the negative side of everything is toxic. Recognize that holding onto negative feelings is a burden to carry and in turn promotes negative emotions. Forgiveness allows you to put the burden down.
Learn to say “no”
“When you say ‘yes’ to something, you say ‘no’ to something else,” Bertini says. People often agree to do something because they want to be helpful but in the process they forget about themselves, she adds. “Pause for a moment and mindfully look at what you’re being asked to do.”
Take risks
“Take lots of risks,” Bertini says. People in their 20’s should absolutely take risks with their job because they need to find out what they truly like, she adds. Now is also the time to invest money, Bertini says. “Take risks with ideas at work because you never know what will stick.”
Turn a weakness into strength
It starts with recognizing what your weakness is in the first place. Every strength and weakness has an opposing side, Bertini says. For example, if you are a perfectionist, your weakness is working too much, but you should focus on how this is your strength – the result will be great.
Talk less, listen more
Communication is imperative to all businesses and relationships, Bertini says. “People need to listen more, including to what’s not being said, which include the tone.” Most people just wait, sometimes impatiently, for their turn to speak and are not interested in finding common ground.
Be curious
Ask a lot of questions and be and act interested when communicating with other people, Bertini says. “When you’re curious, you cannot be judgmental.” Nobody likes to be judged. “Stay curious and don’t make any assumptions.”
Stop comparing yourself to others
“Comparing is a fear-based emotion that is rooted in ego and keeps us closed and in fear,” Bertini says. Social media is making this a huge problem for young people because they think it’s real, she adds. “It is real but for the three seconds when the photo was taken.” You don’t have all the facts, she adds. This won’t be a realistic comparison.
It’s OK to change careers
Most people are excited but also afraid to start anew, Bertini says. There are ways to deal with these emotions so they don’t hinder your success. “Create a big vision but take on one task at a time,” she adds. Make a list of what needs to be done and check the items on it one by one. Look at how far you’ve gone, acknowledge your success and then take the next step. “Before you know it you’ll be there.”
Forget the “what if” argument
“Most people I see worry a lot about the future,” Bertini says. “They don’t stay in the present.” They focus too much on what tragedy will occur if something happens. How you focus your energy is crucial, she adds. People spend their energy worrying about not being prepared, and that is nor preparing. “Focus on what needs to happen today, and don’t mix anxiety and worry into it.”

Super food is a word that is commonly used by many people, and can have many different meanings.

]]>On Thursday night, I got to meet and chat with the incredible Dr. Daryl Gioffre at a wonderful event at the Peleton Store on 84th and Madison. The event celebrated the launch of his new book, “Get Off Your Acid: 7 Steps In 7 Days to Lose Weight, Fight Inflammation and Reclaim Your Health & Energy.”
Dr. Gioffre is just who I need in my Life right now. A prolonged period of extreme stress due to running multiple businesses, an apartment crisis and my father’s Alzheimer’s has packed an extra 25 lbs on to my already chubby frame, mostly around the middle! Having beat every other vice – alcohol and smoking, I am now addicted to food, especially sugar! Dr Gioffre hipped me to the vital importance of keeping the body alkaline to avoid illnesses such as weight gain, diabetes, cancers and Alzheimer’s. I have known about this for years. But the exact steps we need to take and tests we need to do, I was unaware of.
He also explained the difference between good Omegas and bad ones. I always thought that we needed Omega 3s, 6s and 9s. But the good Doc explained that next to blood PH, the Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio is the most important one in our bodies. Also known as the AA/EPA ratio, the ratio should ideally not be more than 1:1 and definitely not more than 4:1. Yet the average American has a more than 19:1 AA/EPA ratio! Thus, we only really need to supplement with 3s. Dr. Gioffre conducts a blood test on his patients that allows him to determine that ratio to assist them in getting it back into proper alignment.
Dr. Gioffre’s research into excess acidity and the alkaline diet is a culmination of his years long work with his patients and his own personal experiences with acid, from his lifelong struggles with an addiction to sugar to his father’s diagnosis with one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. “As someone, who battled with my own health issues for a good portion of my life. I had to become a health detective to find the true cause of my problems. I followed the evidence and it led me to acid.” states Dr Gioffre.
His book is lifesaving with chapters on how to turn your body into a fat-burning machine, the most acidic foods and why they are bad, and the most alkaline foods. Get Off Your Acid provides readers with the tools to help determine the specific type of acid that are at the root of our particular health issues and how to transform our bodies into more healthy alkaline environments.
The 7 Steps include:
It was a magical evening. I fell in lust with Peleton video trainer Alex Toussaint – a lean drink of hot chocolate with a deep velvety voice. I want to buy a bike just to have him in my house every day. Back in the saddle, indeed! I was happy to see my fav former RHOHYs, Jill Zarin and Aviva Drescher with her hubby. It was also a blessing to meet Marissa and Chris Cookand their magical little one Charlotte. She is an eight-month old living doll of a baby, who was the life of the soiree. Sista animal lover Chelsea Gioffre, who is Dr. Gioffre’s wife, was also a joy and it”s always great to catch up with Shay from Rubenstein PR. Shay is one of the most professional and gracious PR people in NYC.
I am looking forward to working with Dr. Gioffre on some additional stories to help me and all TGATP readers to “get off their acid!”

Live your happiest and healthiest life ever, compliments of these M.D. and R.D. tips gathered exclusively by Eat This, Not That!
“I have a doctor for my allergies, my osteoporosis and my kids,” our friend Sally said the other day. “But I need one who can also tailor. My jeans never fit right!” Sally: Consider this your prescription—and your inspiration. The researchers at Eat This, Not That! asked 20 doctors and registered dieticians what they do to lose weight—and keep it off—and are happy to present their essential advice. Use it, and then talk to your own doctor about the next best steps for you. And for more no-sacrifice ways to melt fat, check out these amazing 30 No-Diet Diet Tricks.
An easy way to flush the body is by taking a supplement that supports your liver's natural detoxification function. Natural health physician Dr. Fred Pescatore likes Robuvit. "It's an extract from the French oak tree and it actually helps to normalize the enzymes in your liver and reduce oxidative stress to keep it functioning at its best," Dr. Pescatore says. "The liver is our body's detox engine; it removes toxins from the blood stream, breaks down alcohol and drugs, and processes nutrients to be absorbed in the body. So, it's crucial to keep the liver healthy for an optimal detox program." Robuvit is one type of this kind of supplement; ask your doctor for what's right for you, like if there are generic versions that may be better suited for you.
Adding a shot of wheatgrass to your daily routine can have incredible benefits. According to Dr. Daryl Gioffre, celebrity nutrition expert and founder of Alkamind, wheatgrass is one of the most powerful foods on the planet and most effective way to detox and build your blood. "It has a very high alkaline effect on the body. One of the ingredients with major benefit in wheatgrass is chlorophyll, which has the ability to draw toxins from the body like a magnet," says Dr. Gioffre. "The reason why chlorophyll is so powerful is it's basically the same molecular shape as your hemoglobin molecule (red blood cells), except for the center atom, where blood is iron and chlorophyll is magnesium.” And while he recommends a 2-ounce shot at least once a day, you shouldn't drink it like a tequila shot. Instead, he suggests taking a sip, squish in your mouth for 30 seconds, then swallow. Do that again and one more time until the entire shot is gone. You can even use some cinnamon as a chaser!
“Greek yogurt is great for palatability, satiation and protein content," says Gerard Mullin, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Integrative GI Nutrition Services and author of “The Inside Tract: Your Good Gut Guide to Great Digestive Health”. "Yogurt is also great for feeding the good bugs that live in your intestine, which improves the health of your microbiome, the community of microorganisms that live in your body. More and more research is pointing to probiotics as an effective treatment for weight management and obesity. It’s amazing that feeding the good bugs actually helps people lose weight. Organic, grass-fed yogurt is best because you are getting a better omega fatty acid profile. When animals are fed corn they produce dairy with more omega-6s, but grass-fed animals produce dairy with more healthy omega-3s.” Lucky you, we've compiled the ultimate list of the 25 Best Yogurts for Weight Loss.
“I try to avoid excessive caffeine,” says Dr. Mamta M. Mamik, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “An adult can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day—which is equivalent to four 8-ounce cups of coffee—but drinking any more than that can cause calcium excretion, which, over time, may lead to osteoporosis. Avoiding excess caffeine also helps to ward off uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms like lethargy, insomnia, headaches and irritability.”
Eat This, Not That! Tip: Drink tea instead! White tea packs a particular one-two punch that can actually attack belly fat. A study referenced in The 7-Day Flat-Belly Tea Cleanse showed that white tea can simultaneously boost lipolysis (the breakdown of fat) and block adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). The tea’s combination of caffeine and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) seems to set fat cells up for defeat. Try The 7-Day Flat-Belly Tea Cleanse now—test panelists lost 10 pounds in one week!
“For me the best food is dark greens, such as arugula, spinach, and lettuces," says Donald D. Hensrud, M.D, M.P.H., chair of the Division of Preventive, Occupational, and Aerospace Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and author of “The New Mayo Clinic Cookbook”. "They are very low in calories, very high in nutrients, and can be prepared in a variety of ways that taste great —- many different types of salads, pasta dishes, lasagna, sandwiches, pesto, soups, or even a spinach pie! Locally in the summer is best and I always feel good about eating them, there’s no downside.”
“Chickpeas are, of course, a nutritional powerhouse like most legumes. They are a good protein source, and I especially like turning to chickpeas for protein so I don’t need to eat meat," says David L. Katz, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.P.M., F.A.C.P., director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and author of “Disease Proof”. "They have figured in the human diet since the very dawn of civilization, so they are nice connection to our ancestral roots. And they figure as well in some of my favorite cuisines from the Middle East. I love good hummus!”
“Eggs!" says Robert Lustig, M.D., M.S.L., director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at the University of California, San Francisco. "They have lots of high quality protein, especially tryptophan. Protein is satiating, and also you spend more energy converting it to a metabolite that can be burned, which aids in weight management. Eggs got a bad rap in the 1980’s because of the cholesterol in the yolk. But it does not raise the small dense LDL, which is the atherogenic particle [the one that forms plaques in your arteries]. Eggs are great by themselves, with many different ways of preparation, or they can be added to foods easily.”
“I swear by avocados!" says Taz Bhatia, M.D., assistant professor at Emory University in Preventive/Integrative Medicine, director of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine, and author of "The 21-Day Belly Fix". "The heart-healthy unsaturated fat in a delicious serving of avocado helps me stay full, which keeps me from snacking too much. Avocados are packed with vitamins C, K and B6 and they contain pre- and probiotics—keeping my gut healthy!” See 8 more reasons Why Avocados are the Perfect Weight-Loss Food.
“Although I love them, I try to stay away from cream-based soups. They not only bother my stomach, but are also loaded with empty calories and often have concerning fillers like hydrolyzed proteins, food dyes and corn syrup that I find out about later!” says Dr. Taz.
Eat This, Not That! tip: Look for protein-based soups. “I visit Subway once a week with my oldest son on his way home from a long day in after school activities,” says Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, CDN, Real Nutrition NYC. “We grab a sandwich for dinner and I love the healthier choices they have introduced in the past few years. My other go-to at Subway is simply a bowl of the black bean soup and the veggie delight salad with added fresh avocado. Loaded with fiber, this meal is vegetarian, filling, flavorful, heart-healthy, void of all refined flour and full of antioxidants."
“The one kind of food that most helps me live healthfully is nuts, and for me, any nut will do," says Yoni Freedhoff, M.D., medical director of the Bariatric Medical Institute at the University of Ottawa, author of "The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work". "I love them of course because they’re delicious, but also because study after study suggests that their inclusion in my diet helps prevent many chronic diseases. I also love them because they are full of protein and healthy fats that leave me feeling fuller longer, which in turns helps me all day long with dietary restraint. One trick I like to do is buy a cheap 1/4 cup measuring cup to store with my container of nuts. Nuts are quite energy dense, with each 1/4 cup of whole nuts coming in at around 200 calories.”
“Swiss chard is one of the healthiest leafy greens around," states Peggy Kotsopoulos, RHN, nutritionist, and author of Kitchen Cures. "It helps to boost cardiovascular strength and keeps bones healthy. Plus, it has an abundant source of Vitamin K." Vitamin K is one of the most important bone-building vitamins, helping to shuttle calcium to your bones, and helping your bones absorb the calcium once it gets there. One cup contains 374 percent of your DV.
“I try to avoid foods that contains trans-fats, corn syrup and added sugars," says Eugenia Gianos, MD, cardiologist, Co-Clinical Director, Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at NYU Langone Medical Center. "Often listed as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, synthetically engineered trans-fats increase your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and decrease your good (HDL) cholesterol levels, upping your risk of heart attack and stroke." While plain steel-cut oats fit into Dr. Gianos' diet plan, Quaker Instant Oatmeal Fruit&Cream is an example of a product that does not. Every single flavor pack that comes in the box contains ingredients on her "do not eat" list.
Eat This, Not That! tip: In need of a flavor boost? Add fresh fruits, a touch of honey or an ounce of nuts to your bowl instead. And click here for The 55 Best-Ever Ways to Speed Up Your Metabolism!
“Plant proteins are key to health and even people who have difficulty tolerating nuts can often eat seeds without a reaction,” explains Annie Kay, MS, RDN, Lead Nutritionist at Kripalu Center for Yoga&Health. “In addition to protein, chia seeds are rich in fiber (fiber is a plant phenomenon – there is none in animal foods), and filled with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats.” And vegetarians, rejoice: “Nutty and chewy, chia seeds are considered a complete protein providing 5 grams of protein in a two tablespoon serving chia seeds' fatty acids promote heart health, reduce inflammation, and promote brain health. They can be easily baked into muffins and cookies, mixed into oatmeal, or sprinkled on top of a pasta dish for extra crunch,” adds Janel Ovrut Funk MS, RD, LDN.
Superfood Crusted Turnip Fries? Grab some amaranth and get ready for your taste buds and waistline to be delighted. “Like quinoa, amaranth is not actually a grain, but the seed of an amaranth plant. It is high in protein, and surprisingly calcium, too,” says says Lisa Hayim, registered dietician and founder of The WellNecessities. “Amaranth is usually cooked in water, like rice, or can be consumed raw. Amaranth is also naturally gluten free, and has been shown in studies to lower incidences of chronic disease such as heart disease and stroke.” Here are 19 more of the best superfoods you haven’t heard of (yet).
“Hummus should be a food group," says Julieanna Hever, MS, RD, CPT, a plant-based dietitian. "Literally. With all of its potential in the kitchen, there may not be any other food that provides such a satisfying shot of nutrition. Protein-, micronutrient-, and fiber-jammed chickpeas are typically mixed with tahini, which is loaded with healthy fats and minerals, and then boosted along with vitamin C-rich lemon or other citrus, which synergistically improves the absorption of iron from the chickpeas. It is a winning—and delicious!—combination.” Now, excuse us while we go grab our broc and cukes for dipping…
“I eat a very clean, plant-based diet so the avoid list is long for me. However, even for those who eat meat, the processed varieties are a bad choice,” warns David L. Katz, MD, MPH, Director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center and President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. “While the link between meat and chronic disease is fairly tenuous, the connection between salt-, sugar- and chemical-laden processed meats and chronic disease risk is strong and consistent. If you eat meat, it should be pure—like you want your own muscles to be. If you eat the highly processed, adulterated meats they may pay it forward to the meat on your own bones.”
“I don’t drink soda. A long time ago cola had cocaine in it, and it's arguably gotten even more unhealthy since then,” says Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, MD, sports medicine specialist and assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. “Most sodas contain phosphorus, which binds to calcium and increases calcium loss, which is terrible for bone health. Plus, just one can is filled with 40 grams of sugar—the equivalent of 20 sugar cubes—which makes it challenging for the body to maintain healthy glucose and insulin levels. And diet soda is potentially worse. Diet beverages contain low doses of carcinogens and artificial sweeteners that have potentially dangerous effects on the brain and metabolism. While everything in moderation is reasonable, I steer clear of sodas—high risk, no reward.” And see What Happens to Your Body When You Give Up Soda!
“I avoid soymilk,” notes Gonzalez-Lomas. “Yes, the horror stories linking overconsumption of soy products to estrogen-like effects–like the development of enlarged breasts in otherwise healthy males–are exceptional. However, the fact is that soy mimics estrogen and activates estrogen receptors in the body. Do you want to take that risk? Plus, there are plenty of other milk substitutes—like almond milk—that don't carry the same potential side effects.”
“As a plastic surgeon, I'm always thinking about my figure,” says New York City-based physician, Lara Devgan, MD. “To that end, I never eat energy bars or granola bars. Although they can be tasty, for the amount of calorie-dense carbs and fat they contain, you might as well eat a candy bar. Many of these bars are packed with simple sugars, and they aren't quite filling enough to substitute for a meal or snack.” And dip some yogurt into one. No need to read every label at the store; we did the legwork to track down the Best Brand-Name Yogurts for Weight-Loss!
"There isn’t a food I avoid entirely. One cheeseburger never killed anybody unless they choked on it," jokes Blase Carabello, MD, Chairman of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital. "However, I do limit myself to one per month since the dish is high in heart disease-causing saturated fat and served in a processed bun made with refined carbohydrates." (And top it with a green.
