Healthy Homemade Coffee Creamer Recipe

For many of us, our morning coffee is so much more than a caffeine fix. It’s a comforting ritual. It’s the sound of percolating beans or water dripping over the grounds. It’s the smell that fills the entire house, soothing even to the non-coffee drinkers in the family.

I’ve always loved adding extra flavor and creaminess to my coffee, but many store-bought creamers are loaded with dairy, refined sugar, and artificial flavors. That’s why I started making my own. It’s a simple way to add flavor and sweetness to my coffee while being intentional about the ingredients I’m putting into my body.

This simple homemade coffee creamer is rich, naturally sweet, and made with just a few wholesome ingredients. Full-fat coconut milk creates a creamy texture, while soaked dates add sweetness without refined sugar. Flavored Acid-Kicking Coffee Alkalizer adds a subtle hint of taste while neutralizing the coffee’s acid and supporting gut comfort, and vanilla and a pinch of mineral rich sea salt bring all the flavors together.

The result is a creamer that complements the natural flavor of coffee without overpowering it. Read on for more about the ingredients chosen for this recipe, step-by-step instructions, and a few variations to try!

Health Benefits of Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is my favorite dairy-free milk alternative, and it has a long list of gut-loving properties that make it the perfect base for this homemade coffee creamer.

  • Quick Energy: The fatty acids in coconut milk are digested quickly, and your body turns them into immediate energy instead of storing them as fat.
  • Immunity Boost: Coconut milk is rich in lauric acid, which your body converts into monolaurin, a compound known for its antiviral, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties.
  • Healthy Digestion: Coconut milk is gentle on the stomach and helps balance intestinal flora.
  • Magnesium: One cup of coconut milk provides around 20% of your daily recommended magnesium intake, making it a great way to get more of the magnesium you need for balanced mood, clarity, and focus!

Not all coconut milk is created equal, however. Check the ingredients and make sure to avoid additives such as carrageenan, a known carcinogen linked to colon inflammation. Look for organic, full-fat options like Native Forest.

Full fat coconut milk gives this creamer its rich, creamy texture. Light coconut milk can still work in this recipe, but you’ll end up with a thinner creamer and will likely need to use less water.

Using Dates vs Sugar

I love a hint of sweetness in my coffee, and dates are the perfect, whole-food alternative to regular sugar. Dates are made up of natural sugars and contain fiber, magnesium, iron, and polyphenols.

And if you’re looking to avoid the blood sugar spike that can come with store-bought, heavily sweetened creamers, dates are a great option. With their lower glycemic index, they’re a much more blood-sugar-friendly sweetener.

A Look at Low Acid Coffee

Low acid coffee is specifically processed to have lower acidity than regular coffee, making it more gut-friendly. Some people find low acid coffee more comfortable to drink, especially if they already suffer from reflux symptoms.

But if you already have a coffee brand you love, there’s no need to switch. You can simply neutralize the acid in your coffee using Acid-Kicking Black Coffee Alkalizer, or combine one of Alkamind’s flavored coffee alkalizers in this homemade coffee creamer to add a hint of flavor while supporting your gut.

Available flavors include:

Whether you already enjoy low acid coffee or are looking for a way to support your gut while enjoying your morning coffee, this homemade creamer is an easy add-in! The creamy coconut milk and natural sweetness of the dates are a delicious way to add some extra flavor, while the coffee alkalizers work behind the scenes to support digestion and reduce reflux-related discomfort.

How to Make Homemade Coffee Creamer

This recipe is quick, easy to make, and versatile! You can whip it up when you need it, or make a batch ahead of time to have it ready for those busy mornings when your coffee needs a little something extra.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Cover the dates with hot water and soak for 10 minutes. Drain well.
  2. Add the coconut milk, softened dates, vanilla, and sea salt to a high-speed blender.
  3. Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Add a small amount of filtered water if you prefer a thinner consistency.
  4. Pour into a clean glass jar with a tight-fitting lid.
  5. Add a splash to hot or iced coffee. For an optional functional boost, froth Acid-Kicking Coffee Alkalizer directly into your coffee for alkalizing minerals to help neutralize coffee’s acidity, plus MCTs to support steady, fat-burning energy.

Recipe Tip

This creamer is so easy to customize depending on your tastes. For a richer creamer, use less water. If you prefer it lighter, add water a tablespoon at a time until you reach the right consistency. You can also adjust the sweetness by using fewer dates, eliminating them entirely, or adding more if you want a sweeter creamer

Storage

Store the creamer in a sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days. Natural separation is normal, so shake the jar well before each use.

For longer storage, pour the creamer into an ice cube tray and freeze. Transfer the frozen cubes to a sealed container and use within one month. Add a cube directly to iced coffee or thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Optional Seasonal Add-Ins

One of the best parts about making your own coffee creamer is that you can customize the flavor depending on your tastes or the season. Start with this creamy coconut milk and date base, then experiment with different spices, flavor extracts, and seasonal ingredients to create your own combinations. There are so many delicious ways to make this recipe your own! Here are a few of my favorites.

Pumpkin Spice

Add 2 tablespoons of organic pumpkin puree, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon each of nutmeg, ginger, and cloves.

Peppermint Mocha

Use the Mocha Acid-Kicking Coffee Alkalizer in the original recipe, and add either ⅛ or ¼ teaspoon of peppermint extract, depending on how strong you want the peppermint flavor to be.

Maple Pecan

Add 2 tablespoons of maple syrup to the finished creamer recipe. Lightly toast 2 to 3 tablespoons of pecans, then thoroughly blend with the creamer. Strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove any small pieces of pecan.

To avoid changing the texture, you could also create a pecan infusion by following these steps:

  • Toast ¼ cup of pecans.
  • Warm the creamer.
  • Place the toasted pecans in the creamer to steep for about 20 minutes.
  • Strain the creamer to remove the pecans.
