If you read my last article, The 10 Worst Foods for Acid Reflux and What to Eat Instead, you learned that improving digestion is not simply about removing the foods that create stress on your body. It is also about adding the foods that help your body function the way it was designed.

Many people spend years trying to manage digestive symptoms. They eliminate foods, try different diets, take quick fixes, and search for answers, but they never address the foundation. The truth is, digestion is much more than what happens in your stomach.
Your digestive system determines how well you break down food, absorb nutrients, and provide your body with the building blocks it needs for energy, repair, and balance.
As I often say: “You’re not what you eat. You’re what you digest, absorb, and assimilate.” You can eat the highest-quality foods in the world, but if your body cannot properly digest and absorb those nutrients, you are missing out on their full benefit.
This is why I focus so much on the foundations of health: gut health, mineral balance, reducing inflammation, hydration, and creating better daily habits.
This philosophy is at the heart of Get Off Your Acid and Get Off Your Sugar. True health is not created through fear or restriction. It comes from understanding your body and giving it what it needs to thrive.
The goal is not DEPRIVATION; it's about MODERATION. Food should not simply be something you use to satisfy cravings in the moment. Food should be information. It should provide your body with the nutrients, minerals, and compounds it needs to build strength.
One of the biggest shifts I encourage people to make is moving from stress eating to strength eating. Many cravings are not a failure of willpower. They are often your body communicating that something is missing.
When you give your body the right nourishment, you can begin to crush your cravings by addressing the deeper need instead of fighting the symptom. This is where digestion begins.
Your Gut Needs the Right Environment to Thrive
Your digestive system is home to trillions of microorganisms that play an important role in your overall health. They influence digestion, immunity, inflammation, and even how your body responds to stress.
I often compare your gut to a garden. A healthy garden requires balance. This is why one of the principles I teach my clients is: Weed. Seed. Feed.
First, you weed out the things that create imbalance, including excess sugar, processed foods, and habits that create unnecessary stress inside the body. Then, you seed your gut with beneficial bacteria through foods that support a healthy microbiome.
Finally, you feed that ecosystem with the nutrients it needs to grow stronger. Healthy digestion is not about finding one magic food. It is about creating an environment where your body can function the way it was designed.
The 10 Best Foods to Support Healthy Digestion
When it comes to digestive health, the best foods are often the ones that have been used for generations. These foods naturally provide enzymes, fiber, minerals, antioxidants, and nutrients that support the body’s digestive processes.
Here are 10 of the foods I recommend most often for supporting better digestion.
1. Ginger
Ginger is one of the oldest and most trusted digestive foods in the world. This powerful root has traditionally been used to support healthy digestion and encourage comfortable movement through the digestive tract.
One of my favorite ways to enjoy ginger is as a warm tea after meals, but it can also easily be added to smoothies, stir-fries, dressings, and everyday cooking.
Sometimes the smallest habits create the biggest changes.
2. Papaya
Papaya is an incredible digestive-supporting food because it naturally contains enzymes, including papain, that help break down proteins.
Digestive enzymes are the helpers that allow your body to transform food into nutrients it can actually use. Adding enzyme-rich foods like papaya can be especially beneficial as digestion naturally becomes less efficient over time or during periods of stress.
3. Avocado aka “God’s Butter”

For years, fat was misunderstood. The truth is your body needs the right kinds of fat for digestion, hormone production, brain function, and nutrient absorption.
Avocados provide healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, and minerals that support your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from the foods you eat.
They are also incredibly satisfying, which helps support balanced blood sugar and reduce the cravings that often come from processed foods and excess sugar.
This is a major focus of Get Off Your Sugar because stable blood sugar is one of the foundations of lasting health.
4. Bone Broth
Some of the most powerful foods are also some of the oldest. For generations, cultures around the world have used slow-simmered broths as a source of nourishment and restoration.
Bone broth provides collagen, gelatin, amino acids, and minerals that support the gut lining and the body’s natural repair processes.
A healthy gut barrier is one of the foundations of overall wellness because your digestive system is constantly interacting with everything you eat, drink, and absorb.
5. Leafy Greens
If there is one food category I wish more people included every day, it would be leafy greens.
Spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, Swiss chard, and other dark leafy greens are packed with fiber, antioxidants, and one of the most overlooked foundations of health: minerals.
They are also rich in chlorophyll, the green pigment found in plants that helps them absorb sunlight and create energy. Chlorophyll has often been called a “blood builder” because of its structural similarity to hemoglobin, the protein in our red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.
This is one reason I encourage people to bring more deep green plants into their daily routine. These foods provide the minerals and phytonutrients your body needs to support energy, detoxification, and overall balance. Minerals are the spark plugs of life.
Your body relies on minerals for thousands of daily functions, including digestion, energy production, hydration, and maintaining balance.
Unfortunately, many modern diets provide plenty of calories while leaving the body depleted of the minerals it needs most. Adding more mineral-rich foods is one of the simplest ways to begin shifting your body toward better balance.
6. Asparagus

Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables for supporting a healthy gut because it does more than simply provide fiber.
It naturally contains prebiotic compounds, including inulin, that help feed the beneficial bacteria already living in your digestive tract. Think of prebiotics as food for the good bacteria in your gut.
This connects directly to one of the principles I teach: Weed. Seed. Feed.
You can introduce beneficial bacteria, but you also need to give them the right environment and nourishment to thrive. Adding more fiber-rich, prebiotic vegetables like asparagus is a simple way to help support that healthy digestive ecosystem.
7. Chia Seeds

Small but mighty, chia seeds are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can add to your daily routine.
They provide soluble fiber that supports regular digestion while also helping nourish beneficial bacteria in your gut.
Chia seeds also provide omega-3 fatty acids and minerals that support overall wellness. Because chia absorbs water, hydration is especially important when increasing fiber intake.
8. Berries
When it comes to supporting digestion while being mindful of sugar intake, berries are one of the best choices.
Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, compounds that help support a healthy inflammatory response and nourish beneficial gut bacteria.
This is another example of why food quality matters. Not all carbohydrates affect your body the same way. A bowl of berries is very different from a processed dessert filled with refined sugar and artificial ingredients.
The goal is not to fear carbohydrates. The goal is to choose the ones that work with your body instead of against it.
9. Digestive Herbs and Spices
Some of the most powerful digestive foods are also some of the simplest.
Fennel, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, oregano, turmeric, and other herbs provide antioxidants and plant compounds that support overall health.
For generations, herbs were not just decoration on a plate. They were functional foods. Adding more herbs and spices is one of the easiest ways to increase both flavor and nourishment.
10. Bitter Greens

One of the most overlooked categories of digestive-supporting foods is bitter greens.
Foods like arugula, dandelion greens, watercress, and radicchio have traditionally been valued because they support the body’s natural digestive processes.
Today, our diets tend to favor sweet and salty flavors while leaving bitterness behind. But sometimes the foods we need most are not always the foods we crave first.
Bringing More Plants and Minerals Into Your Life
Adding more plants and mineral-rich foods is one of the simplest ways to support digestion.
But many people today are starting from a place of depletion due to modern diets, stress, and environmental factors.
While whole foods should always be the foundation, additional mineral support can be helpful for many people who are trying to restore balance.
This is why I created Acid-Kicking Minerals.
This fast-absorbing alkaline mineral blend is designed to support healthy acid balance, digestion, energy, and overall mineral replenishment. With an optimized calcium-to-magnesium ratio and chelated magnesium for absorption, it provides targeted support to help your body restore balance from the inside out.
Supporting Digestion Starts With the Foundation
Improving digestion is not about finding one magical food. It is about creating an environment where your body can function at its best.
It means choosing more whole foods. It means supporting your mineral levels. It means staying hydrated. It means reducing the excess sugar, processed foods, and daily habits that create stress inside the body. Food is always the foundation.

But many people today are starting from a place of depletion due to modern diets, stress, and environmental factors.
This is why I created the Acid-Kicking Reflux Bundle. It combines the targeted support I recommend most often for people looking to support mineral balance, gut health, and a healthier digestive environment.
Small changes, done consistently, create lasting results. Your body is always communicating with you. Bloating, reflux, cravings, fatigue, and digestive discomfort are not random problems to simply silence. They are signals asking for your attention.
The goal is progress, not perfection.
To your health,
Dr. Daryl Gioffre
