Can you relate? This could be one of the biggest ah-ha moments of your health puzzle yet!
No heartburn, no sour taste in the mouth, no regurgitation of foods or liquids.
But…
You are constantly:
- Clearing your throat
- Coughing
- Dealing with a hoarse voice.
You aren’t sick, you aren’t congested, and you can’t figure out what is wrong with you.
You may be experiencing Silent Reflux, also known as Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR).
It’s called silent because it doesn’t usually produce the classic heartburn symptoms. Instead, the irritation shows up higher up: in your throat, voice box, and sinuses. Because of this, it’s one of the most commonly misdiagnosed digestive issues.
Is this you?! Have you spent years treating allergies, sinus problems, or chronic coughs without realizing the true cause may actually be REFLUX?!
I’m here to break down what Silent Reflux really is…and more importantly, how to fix it naturally.
What Is Silent Reflux?
Let’s start with the basics. Silent reflux happens when stomach contents (including acid and the digestive enzyme pepsin) travel up the esophagus and reach the throat and vocal cords.
Unlike traditional acid reflux (GERD), which primarily irritates the esophagus, LPR affects delicate tissues in the throat. These tissues are far more sensitive to digestive enzymes, which is why even small amounts of reflux can cause persistent symptoms.
But here’s why it’s so often misdiagnosed: You may not feel heartburn at all, so you wouldn’t assume it had to do with reflux. Instead, the irritation shows up in ways most people never connect to digestion.
This is another reason why it is called silent reflux, as most people suffer from it in silence.
But that is why I am here: to get loud about reflux and real solutions!
Signs of Silent Reflux
The symptoms may seem unrelated to your digestive issues, which is why many people bounce between ENT specialists, allergy medications, and cough suppressants without relief.
Common symptoms include:
- Constant throat clearing
- Post-nasal drip or excess mucus
- Chronic cough that won’t go away
- A hoarse or raspy voice, especially in the morning
- A sensation of a lump in the throat
- Bad breath that persists despite good oral hygiene
The Biggest Reflux Myth
You have probably heard me say this too many times, but I can’t emphasize it enough: Most reflux is not caused by too much stomach acid…it’s caused by too little.
Low stomach acid can lead to poor digestion and food fermentation, creating pressure in the stomach. This pressure pushes stomach contents upward into the esophagus and throat.
Add in inflammation, poor gut bacteria balance, and sluggish digestion, and you have the perfect storm for reflux symptoms. This is why many people take acid-blocking medications for years without actually fixing the underlying problem.
The goal isn’t just to suppress symptoms: it’s to restore healthy digestion.
Why Silent Reflux Feels Worse in the Throat & Natural Ways To FIX it
One key player in Silent Reflux is an enzyme called pepsin.
Pepsin helps break down proteins in the stomach, but when it travels into the throat, it can attach to tissues in the vocal cords and airway. Even small exposures can trigger irritation, inflammation, and mucus production. THIS is why Silent Reflux often presents as chronic throat symptoms rather than chest burning.
The body is incredibly capable of healing when digestion and inflammation are addressed, so here are a few strategies that work.

Go with ginger
Ginger root has long been used to support digestion and soothe inflammation.
Its natural compounds may help:
- Reduce digestive inflammation
- Improve stomach emptying
- Calm irritation in the stomach and throat
Support your throat healing
Think: soothe + protect
Try:
- Warm water + raw honey (learn more about honey here)
- Herbal teas (here’s my best healing tea for reflux)
- Aloe vera juice (for soothing lining—I’d drink a half cup of aloe vera juice before meals)
- Hydration (thins mucus + reduces irritation)
- Coconut (all coconut products help soothe inflammation in the esophagus, I love drinking my golden coconut mylk)
Change HOW you eat (not just WHAT)
This is one of the most underrated fixes.
- Eat smaller meals (less pressure = less reflux)
- Stop eating 3 hours before bed
- Eat more slowly (digestion starts in your mouth)
This alone can dramatically reduce symptoms.
Remove your personal triggers (this is huge)
Common LPR triggers:
- Coffee (unless you use my Acid-Kicking Coffee Alkalizer to neutralize the acid)
- Chocolate
- Citrus
- Tomatoes
- Alcohol (unless you use my Acid-Kicking Alcohol Alkalizer to neutralize the acid)
- Fried/processed foods (these should always be limited!)
But here’s the truth: Your triggers may be unique, so start tracking what makes your throat worse.
Rebuild your gut with the Acid-Reflux Bundle
This bundle works synergistically to strengthen your gut, throat, and entire body from the inside out. Order your bundle here! At the end of the day, Silent Reflux is a signal from your body, not just a random symptom…so give it what it wants and needs.
When You Address Digestion, Everything Changes
It might not be allergies, sinus issues, or your new diagnosis of the week. And it certainly doesn’t require a lifetime of medication.
When you focus on healing digestion, reducing inflammation, and supporting your gut, your body often responds quickly. This is when real, lasting healing can begin.
