March (Un)Madness

March Madness starts in a week, and my bracket is ready. I love the banter, camaraderie, game-day outfits, and the “30 seconds left” intensity—it’s all so much fun. What a boring (and unhealthy) world we would have without sports.

However, it’s also a good reminder to limit “madness” to just basketball tournaments.

Let me break down the chronic stress game plan so you can pick the winning team:

Studies show multiple bouts of constant chronic low (and high) level stress can change your MICROBIOME (gut health) in a significant way.

When we are stressed, EVERYTHING is projected outwards on our external environment. That means there is no energy to go inwards for growth and repair because your body is in a state of fight or flight. Your body can only play hard-core defense at this point.

The fact is, our brain is primitive. It cannot distinguish between a physical threat (like being eaten by a tiger) or an emotional threat (fight with your boss or spouse, traffic, etc.). Everything is projected OUTWARDS, and there’s no healing going inwards. It’s just in survival mode.

When you are stressed, the body doesn’t care about your immune system or your digestion – it literally shuts it down. It only focuses on getting away from danger RIGHT NOW. Your body was not designed to live like this, so it turns off key systems that keep you healthy. 

This mode turns off the GUT MICROBIOME, causing all the downstream issues such as inflammation, fatigue, skin issues, digestive issues, brain fog…and the list goes on—and on.

UnMadness Drills

The best way to get better at a sport is to practice; the same goes for your emotional and gut health. Remember, you HAVE CONTROL over what you do and how things impact you. Here are a few drills:
