The Remedy for an Underactive Thyroid (That Could Also Help Weight Loss)

Have you ever suspected that you have an underactive thyroid gland?

If so, you wouldn’t be alone. And you might be correct.

It is estimated that 20 million Americans are living with some form of thyroid disease. And yet, as many as 60% of them are unaware of their condition.

That’s in part because the symptoms of an underactive thyroid are similar to those that get mistaken for a “natural” part of the aging process. A slowing metabolism, weight gain, thinning hair, and more might not seem like anything other than getting older.

But if there is something you can do to make weight loss easier, speed up your metabolism, boost your energy levels, and generally make you feel better all around, it’s worth finding out if you might be one of the many people with an underactive thyroid.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism (aka. Underactive Thyroid):

  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Sensitivity to cold temperatures
  • Weight gain
  • Thinning hair
  • Depression or mood changes
  • Brain fog

You may be surprised to know, though, that whether you’re talking about Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease that causes hypothyroidism), Grave’s Disease (hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid), or just a sluggish thyroid that is slightly underactive, the fix for these conditions is the same.

Today, I’m going to share what you can do if your thyroid is not functioning optimally to improve your thyroid health, feel better, and even lose weight if that’s your goal.
So many people who struggle with an underactive thyroid also struggle to lose weight. I really feel for them, because their endocrine systems are working against them, making it harder to keep from gaining weight, much less lose it.

That’s why the tips below can be immensely beneficial for anyone with a sluggish metabolism – even if your thyroid is technically within the normal range of function.

Fix Your Thyroid by Fixing Your Gut

Thyroid dysfunction is caused by an overactive autoimmune system, and in order to heal the thyroid naturally, we start by calming the autoimmune response.

Did you know that the immune and autoimmune systems’ home is in your gut?

Although the prevailing treatment for thyroid dysfunction is prescription pills, there is no pill your doctor can prescribe you to fix the gut problems that are the root cause.

Your intestines are lined with a barrier that keeps harmful substances from passing through to the rest of your body, or at least it should. What happens when anyone struggles with autoimmune disorders is that the intestinal lining gets damaged, and increasingly, toxins and harmful substances that are supposed to be making their way out of your body slip right back in.

The damage to the intestines that leads to a “leaky gut” is caused by:

  • Chronic stress
  • An overload of environmental toxins
  • Bacterial imbalance in the gut’s microbiome
  • Medications, especially antibiotics
  • An acidic diet full of processed foods, dairy products, and sugar

Other signs your gut needs healing, in addition to thyroid disorder, is food sensitivities, IBS, and any skin issues, including acne.

The 3 Steps to Fix Your Gut & Optimize Your Thyroid Function:

 1. Stop the poisoning and remove the foods that are making it worse.

Even if inflammatory, acidic foods did not cause the problems within your gut, they are exacerbating them. So in steps 1 and 2, we are going to remove the foods that make the problem worse while replacing them with foods that will heal the digestive tract.

Offending foods include refined grains, soy, rice and anything with gluten. Sprouted wheat bread like Ezekiel bread is fine eventually, but as your body heals, you want to remove all gluten.

Stay away from all dairy products. The dairy protein, casein, that hurts the digestive tract is found in even goat’s and sheep’s milk, so only use plant-based dairy alternatives like almond, and cashew milk

Perhaps the worst thing you can eat is sugar. Sugar is one of the most acidic substances on the planet and is helping the bad bacteria in your digestive system, making a leaky gut worse.

You’ll also want to avoid meat, antibiotics, and even over the counter pain relievers. You may not need to say goodbye to meat forever, but a leaking gut is an ACID problem and you MUST avoid these foods for a few months to give your gut a chance to heal.

2. Eat healing alkaline foods instead.

Add plenty of good healthy fats into your diet like chia, and flax seeds, as well as all coconut products. Foods rich in omega-3 fats like wild-caught Pacific or Alaskan salmon also support your healing gut. You’ll also want to take a good omega-3 fatty acid supplement with no heavy metals like Alkamind Acid-Kicking Omega-3.

Low-sugar fruits like tomatoes, avocados, and citrus fruits other than oranges are the way to go while your gut is healing. Since you’re steering clear of sugar, even high sugar fruits like bananas should be avoided. Raw and steamed vegetables are a great source of healing nutrients, and soups made with homemade broths can be especially good for the gut.

With all produce, choose organic because anything that might have been produced using pesticides will aggravate gut problems. Add in supporting supplements.

In addition to foods that naturally fix your gut and your thyroid, you’ll need some supplements to kick things into high gear and speed up the healing process.

Load up on a good, refrigerated probiotic from a brand you can trust. Always go for the kind you have to refrigerate, and you should change your brand or formula up every 90 days as the bacteria gets used to the same probiotic.

Digestive enzymes with each meal are also key to starting to absorb nutrients from the good foods you’re eating, because otherwise, you won’t be getting full benefit as nutrients leak out of the gut.

L-Glutamine is an amino acid supplement that has anti-inflammatory properties to repair the walls of your intestines.

Quercitin will help seal the gut, preventing a leaky gut from occurring again.

And finally, load up on extra servings of green superfoods to restore imbalances after months or even years of gut problems. Just one scoop of Acid-Kicking Greens in water or a smoothie delivers 5 whole servings of raw super foods in less than 30 seconds!

What’s unique about Acid-Kicking Greens in comparison to other superfood supplements that the wheatgrass is broken down into a powder in a way that it’s practically predigested for you – with little to no degradation whatsoever. Other brands cannot say that.

Despite your gut not yet being fully healed, you’re going to absorb a lot more of the wheatgrass and other beneficial ingredients, which will:

  • Boost your energy
  • Improve digestion
  • Rejuvenate skin
  • Help you lose weight
  • Provide mental clarity
  • Speed up your metabolism!
