Steamed Artichoke With Lemon & Herbs Recipe by Dr. Daryl

One of the biggest breakthroughs I’ve ever had in my relationship with food was the realization that many delicious foods act like superchargers for my body, fueling me with lasting energy while fighting disease.

Today’s recipe features one of those superfoods. Artichokes are a bio-hack for improving digestion, heart health, and liver health, they help regulate blood sugar, and can help you crush cravings for sugar and other foods you want to avoid.

For more bio-hacks to crush cravings, watch for my blog post on Thursday.

Artichokes are among the superfoods that act as prebiotic gut healers because they are fiber-dense, along with onions, garlic, sweet potatoes, chia seeds, leeks, asparagus, and dandelion greens.

In this recipe, we’ll steam the artichokes and season with lemon, salt, and aromatics to create a tasty and unique snack or side dish.

Chelsea and I blew our kids’ minds when we introduced artichokes to them recently. What a fun food to eat for kids and adults!

Between scraping the flavorful outer leaves and eating the delicious inner hearts, there’s a lot to explore and love about artichokes. Just remember to discard the inedible choke at the center before you chow down.

For more on how to remove the guilt and shame too many of us feel when it comes to eating, and replace them with a powerful yet easy-to-follow program with practical tips for your real life, you’ve got to read my newest, best-selling book, GET OFF YOUR SUGAR: Burn the Fat, Crush Your Cravings, and Go From STRESS EATING to STRENGTH.

“I’ve followed Dr. Daryl’s Get Off Your Sugar Program for a little over a year. It’s doable, it’s delicious, and I’ve seen the proof that it works too… I love how Dr. Daryl focuses on what you need to add to your diet instead of what to take away, but I think what really makes his approach so powerful is that he helps you get off—and stay off—the stress-eating roller coaster.” –Kelly Ripa, excerpt from the GET OFF YOUR SUGAR Foreword

Ingredients [Serves 2]

2 artichokes

1 lemon, freshly juiced

1 tsp. dried oregano

1 tsp. dried basil

1 tsp. dried thyme

Sea salt (Celtic Grey, Himalayan. Or Redmond Real Salt) to taste

Black pepper to taste

Snip off sharp tips on the artichoke leaves and cut off stem. Place in a steam basket and steam for 30 to 40 minutes until tender. You will know it’s done when a fork easily pierces the stem. Squeeze fresh lemon, sea salt and dried oregano, basil and thyme.
