As for salmon, here’s the gist: Never eat farmed or Atlantic salmon, as they are loaded with mercury and even food dyes! My version uses nourishing oils and other gut-loving ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 wild-caught salmon fillets (about 6 oz each)
- 3 tbsp coconut aminos
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed or finely minced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, finely grated
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- ½ tsp toasted sesame oil
- ½ tsp fresh lime or lemon juice
- Pinch of chili flakes (optional—for mild heat)
- 1 tbsp water (to thin the sauce slightly, optional)
- 1 tsp sesame seeds (for garnish)
- 1 green onion, thinly sliced (for garnish)
- Optional: sliced red pepper, scallions, and microgreens
Directions
Make the Teriyaki Sauce:
In a small bowl, whisk together coconut aminos, garlic, ginger, raw honey, sesame oil, lime juice, and water (if needed to thin). Add chili flakes if using.
Marinate the Salmon:
Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish or ziplock bag. Pour ¾ of the sauce over the fish and marinate for 15–30 minutes (or up to 1 hour in the fridge).
Cook the Salmon:
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add salmon, skin-side down, and cook for about 4–5 minutes, then flip and cook another 3–4 minutes until the salmon is cooked through and glazed.
Thicken the Remaining Sauce (Optional):
Pour the leftover ¼ of the sauce into the pan during the last 1–2 minutes of cooking, letting it reduce slightly to a sticky glaze.
Plate and Garnish:
Top with sesame seeds and green onions. Add red pepper slices or microgreens if desired for color and crunch.
For a gut-friendly twist, skip the white rice and serve your salmon over a fluffy bed of quinoa. It’s high in fiber and plant-based protein, making it the perfect base to soak up that flavorful teriyaki glaze.
Quinoa:
- Rinse 1 cup of quinoa under cold water.
- Add to a pot with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until water is absorbed.
- Fluff with a fork and squeeze in a little lime juice for brightness.

Spoon quinoa into a bowl or plate, place the salmon on top, and drizzle with extra sauce. Add steamed veggies or cucumber slices on the side for a complete, nourishing meal.
