GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are everywhere right now, especially now that they can come in pill form and be sold on Instagram. They’re dominating your group chat, feed, celebrity headlines, and doctors’ offices because yes, they really can help people lose weight fast.
But there are major side effects almost nobody is talking about enough: acid reflux and gut damage.
And YOUR GUT IS EVERYTHING. 90% of serotonin (happiness hormone) is made in your gut, and 80% of your immune system lives in it. Your gut is truly the home of your health and happiness—protect it at all costs!
BUT I’m not anti-GLP-1.
For some people struggling with obesity, these medications can absolutely serve as a helpful SHORT-TERM (2-3 week) bridge while they rebuild healthier habits. However, if you’re using them long-term without addressing your gut health, food quality, stress, hydration, and mineral deficiencies, you’re simply suppressing appetite while the underlying terrain keeps getting worse.
The goal should never be to paralyze digestion forever.
The goal should be to HEAL THE GUT so your body can regulate itself naturally.

Why LONG-TERM GLP-1 Usage Destroys Your Gut
Here’s the truth: GLP-1 medications work in part by slowing down digestion. Your stomach empties more slowly, which keeps you feeling full longer, so you eat less. Sounds great on paper and in Instagram ads. However, the fine print: Your gut pays the price—aka your long-term health and vitality.
Think of your digestive system like a highway:
- Normally, food moves through smoothly.
- But GLP-1s create a massive traffic jam.
- Food sits in the stomach too long, starts fermenting, bacteria feed on that stagnant food, gas builds up, and pressure starts pushing upward.
That’s when reflux symptoms kick in.
And here’s the biggest myth I want to bust: reflux is NOT usually caused by “too much stomach acid.” In many cases, it’s actually the opposite.
You NEED stomach acid to properly digest protein, absorb minerals like magnesium and zinc, and protect your gut from harmful bacteria. The real issue is that the acid is moving in the wrong direction because digestion has slowed down so dramatically.
When pressure builds inside the stomach, it pushes against the lower esophageal sphincter: that tiny valve designed to keep stomach contents where they belong. Once that valve gets overwhelmed, acid rises up into the esophagus and throat. Hello, reflux.
But the gut problems may not stop there.
GLP-1s And Mental Health: “Ozempic Personality”
Your gut and brain are deeply connected. In fact, about 90% of serotonin (the neurotransmitter tied to mood and emotional balance) is produced in the gut. So when digestion slows down and the microbiome becomes disrupted, your mental health can take a hit too.
That’s why conversations around “Ozempic personality” have exploded online recently, with some users describing emotional blunting, increased anxiety, low motivation, or feeling mentally “flat.”
Also, the simple act of sitting down, relaxing, chatting, and enjoying a nutritious, delicious meal (check out our recipes for ideas!) is so good for the soul and your wellbeing. For many people, GLP-1s can create a lot of anxiety around food, make you simply not want to eat, and can lead to or exacerbate a current complicated and unhealthy relationship with food.
THIS is another reason why GLP-1 usage should be a short 2-3 week kick start to your weight loss journey, AND it must be paired with nutrition and a plan.
